 The opening of Maggot Brain is marked by a blast of feedback from speaker to speaker, followed by a voice saying, "Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time because of you all. She's carrying your creation." The speaker continues, speaking about rising above it all or drowning in one's own problems. This introduction was considered strange in 1971 and still is today, but it helped solidify the concept of the "Mothership." The instrumental title track, particularly Eddie Hazel's stunning guitar solo, is a must-listen. George Clinton instructed Hazel to play as if his mother just passed away, leading to an outpouring of grief and emotion that rivals, if not surpasses, Jimi Hendrix's work. Hazel's solo is backed by another gentle guitar rhythm, creating an emotional symphony of sound. The album closes with "Wars of Armageddon," a full-blown jam session infused with freedom chants and airport announcements. In between, there are shorter pieces that showcase the band's funky blend of slow, smoky grooves. "Can You Get to That" showcases folky blues and gospel elements, while "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks" reflects on interracial love, with its drum hits distorted for a unique electronic twist. "Super Stupid" is a standout with its pounding drums and snarling guitar, and "Hit It and Quit It" features a catchy chorus and a fun keyboard solo by Bernie Worrell.
