In the mid-60's there was an Iowa garage band that became one Iowa's hottest rock acts They recorded a four demo songs (that I'm aware of) at the Sears Recording Studios in Omaha, two of which were "Summertime" and "Harlem Nocturne". These demos were recorded on a 45 rpm 7" acetate disc...vinyl or similar over metal. The demo songs were never release commercially.
The Thunderbolts changed their name slightly to The Fabulous Thunderbolts when they released their only 45 rpm record, "My Girl Sue" which was also recorded at the Sears Recording Studio and released on the Poverty Record Label in 1965. This too, is a now rarity.
This rare acetate demo I am putting up for auction, preceded the Poverty 45 rpm release. I am the original owner.
This acetate demo disc is in excellent++ condition. Visually, both sides are mint. The production and the sound on both sides are excellent, but contain some faint background noise. My guess is that this is inherent in acetates being stored for so many years. This disc has been played at most, three times, on a high-end turntable, only. The acetate sits inside the original heavy-duty green Sears Recording Studio sleeve, which is excellent for being 50 years old.
Song information on the Sears Recording Studios label is typewritten (usual for an acetate) with the band's name, song title(s) and the Sears logo on it...then the label was pasted on with glue...pretty bare bones, but that was the way it was done then. (See close-up pics for detail.) There are no markings on the inner disc circle, as there would have been on a typical totally vinyl disc.
The Fabulous Thunderbolts were inducted in the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Good luck bidding on this rare acetate demo.
