I grade all my vinyl records in accordance with the following guidelines, which roughly follow those of the Record Collector Magazine:
Vinyl:
Mint (M): The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Records described as sealed or unplayed are as Mint.
Near Mint (NM): The record is virtually perfect, but there are very slight signs of marks, which are so light that they have no effect on the quality of playback. It is almost as new.
Excellent (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, with visible light scratchmarks, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
Very Good (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
Good (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
Fair (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; - it may even jump.
Poor (P): The record will not play properly due to being scratched, or has bad surface noise, etc.
Bad (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
Sleeve:
Mint (M): The sleeve and any extra items such as the lyric sheet. booklet or poster are in perfect condition.
Near Mint (NM): The cover may have very slight marks and / or creasing, but appears almost perfect.
Excellent (EX): The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good (VG): Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, but without any major defects.
Good (G): The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
Fair (F): The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
Poor (P): The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
