Felt were a 1980s British alternative rock band, named after the way Tom Verlaine enunciated the word "felt" in the Television song "Venus", and led by Lawrence (his surname, Hayward, was never listed in any record credits or press). Lawrence and drummer Gary Ainge were the only constant members (though Ainge is not featured on Felt's first release, recorded solo by Lawrence before the band formed).

Felt are often cited as a major influence by Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch, as well as by American alternative rock group The Tyde. The band released ten albums and ten singles in ten years and then disbanded.

Over the course of its ten-year existence, the band included classically-trained guitarist and co-songwriter Maurice Deebank (who left in 1986), keyboard player Martin Duffy, bassist-turned-lead guitarist Marco Thomas, and a variety of other bassists and guitarists.

During its years with Deebank, Felt cultivated an atmospheric, delicate sound built around Deebank's intricate guitar playing. After firmly establishing themselves on the indie scene, Felt recruited the services of Robin Guthrie as producer for their album Ignite the Seven Cannons, which remains one of the group's most popular albums (although it apparently didn't impress Deebank, who left the band soon afterwards to pursue a solo career). Guthrie's most notable influence is arguably heard in the single "Primitive Painters," which offers the listener a Guthrie-infused 'sonic cathedral of sound,' complete with backing vocals from Guthrie's Cocteau Twins partner Elizabeth Fraser.

With the arrival of Martin Duffy (later of Primal Scream), keyboards (especially the electronic organ) became a more important part of the band's sound, and they dominate the band's two instrumental albums, Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death and Train Above The City (the latter not featuring Lawrence in any capacity except for naming the tracks). It was during this period that the band recorded Forever Breathes The Lonely Word and the follow-up Poem of the River, which are often cited as their masterpieces.

The band recorded their last album, Me and a Monkey on the Moon in 1989. Lawrence went on to form Denim, and subsequently Go Kart Mozart.

It's been a while since I last had any listings. This has been due to a lack of time on my part. I currently have a large amount of items to list but limited time. My current items are all from one source. The original owner hardly played them and kept them in pristine condition. However he did clean them with a record cleaning fluid and did not dry them properly. Hence there is a kind of 'film' on some of the vinyls. I have cleaned some of them and it comes off easily with record cleaning fluid and a cloth (better still, a vacuum cleaning machine) and has in no way damaged the vinyl and those that I have tried have played superbly. I normally provide detailed descriptions of each item with play grading but limited time is preventing me from doing that. As such my current listings will have minimal descriptions and less detailed gradings. However I can assure you the vast majority have hardly been played and are Ex to Mint- save for the cleaning film on quite a few which just needs a wipe. As always refund if not entirely happy.

The collection spans 60's/70's & 80's Rock, Folk, Blues, Punk, New wave etc and will be sold in no particular order so do look at my other items and log me as a favourite as there are loads of nice bits to follow.

I hope that you find this item to your interest, please see my other auctions for similar items.

Please see my payment and postage and packaging information as shown below before bidding.

I use the record collector grading system when grading records with the addition of a + or - when appropriate in order to give the most accurate description possible. I have also provided my own interpretation of what the gradings mean to me. All records are visually graded in normal light and under artificial light to ensure the item is correctly advertised and surface marks are not missed.

I have 15 years experience of collecting and grading records and as such do as much as possible to ensure buyers are happy with their purchase.

MINT

The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.

My Interpretation - Shop condition - a handful of very light hairlines visible under bright light acceptable. Very minor edge/corner wear to cover (as usual from new LP picked up from record shop rack) is acceptable.

EXCELLENT

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

My Interpretation - Very well cared for and hardly played. Lovely gloss to vinyl which is clean. No scratches but a handful of light surface marks acceptable. Light scratch may also acceptable if does not affect play in any way. Cover etc may have normal light storeage wear or minor creasing

VERY GOOD

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

My Interpretation - Lots of light surface marks and scratches. Some light clicks and/or minor distortion etc acceptable. Fingermarks and dirt on vinyl may also be acceptable. Cover etc in normal condition for age with average wear and tear/creasing etc.

GOOD

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration etc.

My Interpretation - Vinyl badly marked with scuffs/scratches/surface marks etc. Vinyl plays with lots of hiss/clicks/jumps etc may also have extensive groove wear. Cover etc will be bent/scuffed/stained/torn etc.

FAIR

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

My Interpretation - Vinyl is knackered and sounds like a breakfast frying when it ain't jumping or clicking. Cover etc will be badly worn, torn, stained or defaced etc.

POOR

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

My Interpretation - Awful!

BAD

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.

My Interpretation - Shite!!

NOTE - The gradings above differ from 'Goldmine' and other publications grading systems so please read before bidding.

Sometimes a record may be graded visually and aurally. This usually applies to a record that looks badly marked but plays superbly. This is common, particularly with 50's/60's records that can 'look' GOOD but play EXCELLENT or above. In these cases I would normally assess the grading as being somewhere between the two

Some of the items that I offer will be play-graded, but some will not. Therefore if the description does not state the record has been play graded then it has not been so. All play-graded descriptions will be based on how the vinyl sounds on my system.

If you have any questions about the item in question, please ask BEFORE bidding, this will avoid any problems after the close of the auction.

I will refund fully if I have genuinely made a misleading statment in any auction description, this will be a full refund only, no 'part refunds'.

NOTE - Most ebay users are genuine, however for those few who are not, please do not bid on my auctions. I have come across it all before, bidding then not paying, sending back a different item to the one sent to you, claiming the item didn't arrive etc etc. Please don't waist my time.
