Felt, Pictorial Jackson Review, vinyl LP.
This is a German import pressing of the LP, RTD-CRE 12-76.The UK case had a rough card finish to the sleeve, this is the standard glossy card used for most albums.
Typically strange format to the record for Felt at this time in their career. The Side One is for the most part very short songs (all with one exception are under two and a half minutes). Style - hybrid of jangle pop, country, folk, jazz. The vocals by now have become very subdued, almost disassociated. Perhaps Lawrence was trying to point out the conventions and pre-conceptions around songwriting stripping everything down to a concise poetry. Unnecessary solos, middle-eights and repeats are stripped away in favour of a verse, chorus, verse, chorus, stop. The result is 8 songs back to back with the standout track being the conventional 4 minute "Under A Pale Light" - great melody and mood contrasts, perhaps because it's given the time other songs are denied. The second side is a very beautiful atmospheric 12 minute jazz solo by Martin Duffy on a Fender Rhodes. Supplemented with an equally beguiling, though sparse and melancholic, 3 minute jazz instrumental. We are left with a strange game of two halves, the whole thing, despite accessible melodies and instrumentation, feels bizarrely experimental and difficult to listen to, almost as if there's a joke that you don't quite understand being played at your expense. Interesting, stimulating, frustrating, heartbreaking, gorgeous in equal measures.
