This beautiful LP, a superb collector's copy, from German RCA (LM-2200-C, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing, red/silver label, mono, original inner sleeve included) features the wonderful Festival Quartet in magnificent performances of Beethoven's Piano Quartet in E-flat Major Op. 16 and Schumann's Piano Quartet in E-flat Major Op. 47, both recorded circa 1959.

 

The Festival Quartet was comprised of violinist Szymon Goldberg, violist, William Primrose, cellist Nikolai Graudan, and pianist Victor Babin. These four musicians began their quartet at the Aspen Summer Music Festival and all of the Festival Quartet LPs are very much worth seeking out.

 

This is chamber music playing at is very finest, each artist matching the other bar for bar in inspiration and insight, and moreover, RCA has balanced them truthfully – classic readings that remain among the finest recordings even a half century after they were first set down.

This album was nominated for a 1960 Grammy Award, but lost to Arthur Rubinstein's pairing of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas Nos. 18 and 21 "Waldstein", also on RCA.

 

Incidentally, the striking cover art was executed by Eugene Karlin. The English liner notes were written by George Jellinik. The liner notes in German and French are uncredited.

 

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the is near-MINT. There is some minuscule wear at the open edge of the jacket, but that is all. Otherwise, it appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attracitve – overall, this rates as a gorgeous collector's copy.

 

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
