This handsome and very rare LP from RCA (LSC-2147, US pressing, shaded dog label, 1S/1S stampers, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features the wonderful Festival Quartet in a magnificent performance of Schubert's Piano Quintet in A Major "Trout" D. 667, warmly recorded at Manhattan Center, New York, on 13 January 1957
The Festival Quartet was comprised of violinist Szymon Goldberg, violist, William Primrose, cellist Nikolai Graudan, and pianist Victor Babin. They are joined here by Stuart Sankey, double-bass.
This is chamber music playing at is very finest, each artist matching the other bar for bar in inspiration and insight, and moreover, RCA has balanced them truthfully – classic readings that remain among the finest recordings even a half century after they were first set down.
The reverse side of the jacket carries insightful liner notes by Henry W. Simon, printed in English only. The portrait of the composer is uncredited, alas.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the is EXCELLENT. There is mild discoloration along the edges and aging, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although surfaces are not perfectly silent, this is a fine copy and the playback remains enjoyable. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
