"In the early decades of the 20th century both Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, the founders of folklore research in Hungary, collected folk music in the Great Plain. Bartók took notes of some music on the spot in Békés county, luckily, the singing of his young performers could also be recorded on tape half a century later. A couple of these tunes can be heard in one of these discs (6.2.a, 6.7.c). Kodály made phonograph recordings az Nagyszalonta (6.1.b-e, 6.2.c). After their pioneering efforts, nearly all folklorists toured the Great Plain. Yet by today, the traditional musical culture of this region has drifted out of the focus of interest. In the cities, young people prefer the more archaic and extraordinary tunes and instrumental style of the Transylvanian Mez?ség and Gyimes or of southern Transdanubia both in the dancing-houses and elsewhere. That said, the material on this record set will probably come as a surprise to many and will hopefully direct their attention to the genuine values of folk music in the Great Plain.

The series of Hungarian folk music antholgoies is aimed to present Hungarian folk music in its entirety. After the previous albums of Northern Hungary (LPX 18124-28) and Dance Music (LPX 18112-16) the present venture is a cross-section of the folk music in the Great Hungarian Plain. For its presentation, we have listened to the entire material (running for some 1.000 hours) in the Musicological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, recorded in the Great Plain during the three decades between the mid-’50s and the mid-’80s. We have also used the Great Plain songs released on the „Patria” records in the ’30s. Because of poor technical quality, we only selected one phonograph recording or two from Kodály’s famous Nagyszalonta collection of 1916. The tape recordings are also of varying quality as most of them were made off studio (often with poor recorders) in out-of-the-way villages and farmsteads. Thus the background noises of everyday life and the accidental moments of singing and music making are not eliminated. What we get in return is authentic performance.
All the tunes except for a few hardly accessible „Patria” recordings are presented to the public in disc for the first time. We left out of our sample the Great Plain tunes that have already appeared on folk music records, even though that meant resigning from the presentation of some valuable and rare tunes of folk instruments, or their presentation is out of proportion with their actual importance. In our judgment, the music of the Great Plain can be more or less adequately represented without these repetitions as well."
