Calling all acolytes of the high and holy (but mostly high) church of the FLAMING LIPS! Baron Elmo Enterprises proudly directs your attention to this vinyl copy of one of their finest records, now long out of print on lp: The Soft Bulletin, released by Warner Brothers in 1999, issued in a very small double-lp vinyl pressing several years later by Play it Again Sam Records. This was the album on which the Lips would dive headfirst into the luscious psych-pop vortex through which they travelled from cult success… to, well, massive cult success. For this lp, they built a luscious, beautifully orchestrated pop sound that, when applied to a batch of amazing songs, would clobber the domes of their fans like a dayglo anvil dropped from on high by the shade of Syd Barrett. The whole album explodes with incandescent guitar shimmer and abounds in lysergic tomfoolery, festooned with enough killer hooks to fill Captain Ahab’s tackle box. And the inspired notion to spread the contents of the CD onto four sides of nicely pressed vinyl makes for a truly superlative audio experience. The Soft Bulletin is, of course, available on CD, but there’s no way that a mere compact disc could have the sheer shamanic impact of this sacred vinyl object. Both records are in beautiful shape except for a small scuff on one side that does not affect play, while the cover shows slight handling wear.
