Here we have the great Neapolitan tenor Fernando De Lucia performing two Neapolitan songs. They are "Marechiare" by Tosti and "Lu Cardillo" (who may well have been the greatest pitcher the New York Yankees never had) by A. Nonymous.
"Marechiare" is subtitled "Quanno Sponta La Luna" ("When the moon rises over Marechiare") and "Lu Cardillo" is subtitled "Si La Truovo Ca Stace Dormenno" ("If I find Stacey In Your Dormitory" )
It was recorded in Milan on 1st of January, 1911 (thank you Robert Johannesson).
De Lucia's heavy vibrato/tremolo takes a little getting-used-to, but he is a splendid artiste. He was badly served by early re-issue LP-compilers who speeded up his records to "concert pitch" when he actually often chose to sing well below that. Consequently, many of those too-fast versions of his recordings make him sound like a (very musical) sheep.
The correct rpm versions (there are some on You Tube) reveal an interesting and delightful singer.
Especially interesting is the orchestra on both sides. The Fonotipia band were a varied bunch, but this time they seem to have drafted in some players who were actually used to playing the vernacular street-style that these songs require.
The record is remarkably clean and tidy. One visible "mark" in the dead wax around the label is actually (we think) the remains of De Lucia's signature. There's a VERY light inaudible 1cm sleeve-mark on one side.It plays beautifully and you'll be hard-pushed to find a cleaner copy. Let's call it (using that darn VJM too-complicated-for-its-own-good system) approximately an E or thereabouts.
