Here we have the celebrated and highly collectable French Baritone (he's so famous, he's on a stamp!) Victor Maurel. He was born in 1848, for goodness sakes, so he's a true glimpse into the early days of "The Golden Age". In the photo of him that turns up most often, he looks remarkably like H G Wells. Despite this, he was one of Verdi's favourite singers, and was chosen to create, in 1887 the role of Iago in Otello at La Scala, and five years later, the title role in Falstaff. Then, to top it off in 1892 he became the first Tonio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. Pretty good, huh? It's his creator role in "Otello" (Verdi) that you're getting here with "Sogno" on Fonotipia 39032 recorded with piano accompaniment in November 1904 in Milan. The other side, from the same date (thank you Robert Johannesson) is a Neapolitan song "A Marechiare" on Fonotipia 39042 based on a poem by Salvatore Di Giacomo, and composed by Francesco Paolo Tosti.This is a startlingly rare record. It turned up in a large box, in the bottom of a wardrobe, in a used furniture shop in the rough end of Shepherd's Bush. The box contained the complete works of Charlie flippin' Kunz and Gracie Fields, but hidden in there were a valuable rock 'n' roll 78 by Dion And The Bemonts, a priceless (near mint) American Columbia Blues 78 by Barbecue Bob, and this equally priceless offering by Victor Maurel. Things like that used to happen, occasionally, back in the 1970's.
This disc is very clean and tidy. It plays beautifully, and probably grades at around E- but sounds better.
Please study the photographs and decide for youself. Notice on one photo, there's a very very very slight edge chip, nowhere near the grooves. It's very rare. You'll never find another.
