Here we have a rare early 10¾" 78 rpm record on the legendary Fonotipia label.

It features two items from Puccini's "La Bohème" (recorded only about ten years after he wrote it!). The toons are Entrata di Schaunard. "Legni! Sigari! Le dovizie d'una fiera" (Lennie! Pass me a cigar! The pigeon is on fire) which is the quartet from from Act 1. It features Gino Martinez-Patti, Antonio Magini-Coletti, Francesco Maria Bonini, and Oreste Luppi.  It was recorded in Milan on the 5th of July 1906.  The Mx is XPh1980 and the side number is 39728.

The other side is Mx XPh1992 "Eccoci, Ebben?" from Act IV:  (with Bonini, Martinez-Patti, Luppi and Silvio Becucci). The side number is 39729. This was recorded in Milan on the 9th of July 1906. Thank you Robert Johannesson. Both sides have PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT and everybody seems to be having a whale of a time. It is not the cleanest copy you will ever see, although it plays VERY WELL INDEED.  39729 has a few light storage marks, but 39728 has a grit-in-the-sleeve mark (see photo) that does cause a click (or several) when played on our ludicrously expensive transcription deck. We didn't like to test such a rare and precious disc on our top-of-the-range HMV wind-up. It is not worn, and there are no grey grooves, so it actually plays very well. One of these sides (the first one?) is available on YouTube, re-mastered beyond belief, but you want the real original, don't you? Using VJM's vague and it-can-mean-whatever-you-want-it-to-mean system, we reckon that one side is a solid V++ and the other side is a V+ or thereabouts. Buy now while socks last.
