Here we have Antonio Magini Coletti (baritone) and Oreste Luppi (bass) performing the duet from "Linda Di Chamounix" on a lovely Fonotipia disc, numbered 39403/4. It was recorded in Milan on 18th December 1905 (thank you Robert Johannesson) and features piano accompaniment.
The duet is in two parts, "La figlia mia, quell'angelo" (My daughter, that angel) and "Quella Pieta Si Provvida" (Who is bringing her all those pies?).
The disc is remarkably tidy and well preserved, with only a few light scuffs from sleeve-marks to spoil its loveliness. It plays Very Well Indeed.
The disc also appears to be well travelled because there is a rubber stamp which may well be from a dealer in Venice, an Italian Ricordi green sticker and two others, one with a number in fountain-pen ink. These all appear to be very old, probably contemporary with the record's first flush of youth. A later adornment, probably in red crayon or marker, tells us that the disc was sold, in days gone by, for either £8 or £80.
Using the VJM grading system, it's probably a strong V++ but sounds better.
