Forest Swords' first release of 2011 is an excellent collection of early demo material remastered for vinyl. From first listen it strikes us as much more visceral than anything we've heard from FS thus far. There's still a pronounced dub influence, but the elements of fractured R&B are mostly absent, replaced with more plangently distorted guitars. It's certainly not a radical departure, and much of it still sounds like Morricone perched by a misty Mersey with an 808, especially with the shoegazing bleakness and spidery slow drum machines of 'Down Steps', and to arresting effect on 'Red Rocks Fogg', but the most interesting sections are the most distinctly "rocky" parts such as the Earth-like crush of 'Riverbed'.
