(UK TRANSATLANTIC, TRA 197, 1969)
RARE ONLY UK PRESSING of this rare Zappa album! UK pressings of early Mothers albums are incredibly rare and desirable now, especially first pressings. The Transatlantic pressing of Uncle Meat is one of the most desirable, as the vinyl is the best quality of all the original pressings of Uncle Meat and sounds superb. The story as to how Zappa & The Mothers ended up on this folk label over here is interesting enough - Zappa had started his Bizarre label in the US in late 1968 and needed distribution in the UK. Bizarre was owned by Reprise over there and Reprise were distributed by Pye in the UK. Pye refused to handle this album due to the amount of swearing on the album (something Zappa usually got away with somehow), even though they had released the Wild Man Fischer album in 1968, which had far less commercial potential. Strangely, Transatlantic released it, who usually released folk albums. They also released two Fugs albums. This album would have cost quite a lot at the time and didn't sell much at all. It was not repressed in the UK on vinyl ever again and for years was high on collector's wants lists. What makes this copy even more special is that it also has the booklet, which only came with the first few hundred copies! These booklets were made in the US and sent over here, they came with all first US Bizarre pressings. There are also some Transatlantic copies that came with a different booklet which was used as their UK tour programme, but that's a whole other story... Good luck finding one of those! Overall, this is a nice copy of this classic and early first UK pressing. This very rarely turns up these days, especially in this lovely condition. This is very hard to find, get it while you can! Don't miss out!
Both discs are in EX+ condition : a few light surface marks on both sides which do not affect play, look and sound great overall, superb pressing with full, rich sound and dynamics - like I say this pressing can't be beat and this is one of the best examples I have ever seen!
Gatefold sleeve is in EX condition : one of the best examples I have ever seen, this sleeve is very prone to wear but this has held up very well over the years, light creases and minimal wear on front and back, light disc imprints on both sides, spine has minimal wear and is fully legible, top edges have minimal wear, bottom edges have some wear but no splits, inside gatefold is almost good as new, lovely!
Booklet is in EX(+) condition : again, one of the best examples I have seen, no creases, staples are intact and rust-free, minimal wear, lovely!
