Goody Goody b/w Creation Of Love
Columbia Records DB 3983, 1957. Rare promotional copy.
We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a few weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things I will be selling is records. The recording career of teenage New York vocal group, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, came and went in a flash. Their first single, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, released on Gee Records in the USA in 1956, was a smash hit, reaching no. 6 on the US pop chart and topping the R&B chart for several weeks. Over little more than the next twelve months the band released eight singles, almost all of which achieved high chart placings. By the end of 1957 however, Frankie Lymon had decided –or been pressured – to pursue a solo career. This change began a decline in popularity for him, which reached its predictable end in 1968, with his death from a heroin overdose.
Why Do Fools Fall In Love was also a big hit in the UK although the Teenagers’ subsequent releases (all released on Columbia) were less successful here. This record, Goody Goody, was the last to to be credited to Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers and is in fact, said to have been recorded without any of the Teenagers present. It was not a hit in the UK, so copies are now very hard to find. This example is particularly interesting because it has a “Factory sample: NOT FOR SALE” sticker on the label of the B-side. Stickers of this type were often used at this time to indicate pre-releases issued for promotional purposes - the equivalent of a demo.
This copy is in very nice condition with only light surface marks and excellent playing quality. It is in its original company sleeve which is also in very good shape. As you can see from the images above, the labels are also in bright, clean condition.
