Rare vinyl pressing of Fred Van Eps And Vess L. Ossman - Kings Of The Ragtime Banjo on the Yazoo label 1044 from 1974. Side one features tunrs by Ossman & side two features songs by Eps. If you're reading this then you know what this music is and need to hear these recordings. You don't have to bid on this auction to hear them though, just do a Google search & several sites will come up that allow you to download these songs or just listen to them. You can also follow the below links to hear 3 songs on Youtube. The earliest song on this l.p. is from 1900 & the latest is from 1923. Both of these gentlemen were masters of the banjo & were world class musicians in their time. Every song here is a winner ! Below is some info. I found on the net, song titles, & links to listen to a few songs from the l.p. This copy is still in its original shrink wrap & the vinyl is VG++ visually. It has a few light marks & some scuffs & needs a good cleaning. In my opinion it should play excellent.
This LP not only helps bring attention to genius of Vess L. Ossman and Fred Van Eps, it also demonstrates the exalted position that their chosen instrument held in American culture during the 1900-1923 period during which these sides were recorded. Long before the guitar achieved preeminence in the United States, playing banjo was all the rage. While today we tend to think of it as something originally exclusive to black songsters and early country musicians from Appalachia, by the late 19th century the instrument had transcended its humble origins and became accepted by parlor society. Ossman and Van Eps' live and recorded performances of rags, marches, two-steps, and cakewalks did much to make this possible by helping introduce the banjo to middle and upper class audiences in America, Britain, and Europe.
If you like the old classic style banjo, this is a good record! I won`t go into any bio information on the men, there is plenty information about them on the web. The material is taken from old 78`s, maybe even some cylinders, but the sound quality is good. Classic style banjo is a finger picking style using at time all 5 digits on the picking hand by some who play this style, so if you are thinking bluegrass or old time country styles of finger picked banjo sounds, you will be suprised by what you will hear. This style was applied almost exclusively to ragtime music. It`s almost shocking what they can play of music written mostly for piano. Ragtime is VERY notey music, so this is high quality picking... and these two men were certainly in the top five players of their time period. A few others that recorded this style that were some of the best that come to mind were Fred J. Bacon & A.A. Farland.
