Somewhere in The Hague, The Netherlands a loooooong time ago......our new club home was about to receive the finishing touch and the Sharks were booked some months earlier to be the first band ever to perform in Hep Cat Home.
Then the phone rang (Long Distance Call From Frome, Somerset, UK....) and Steve Whitehouse told us the Sharks would not be able to play, because they were in the process of splitting up, however he had just formed another band and a cassette tape was in the mail already.
The new bands' name was Frenzy and if we wouldn't mind, they would love to play their first gig in Holland.
A few days of waiting and the cassette arrived. It contained three songs that have later been released on vinyl as well. The cassette did not leave our cassette player for a long time, because it contained some stuff that had a huge impact on us youngsters. The songs were Frenzy, Frustration and Cry Or Die. Then THE day arrived and we picked up three young guys at the ferry at Hook Of Holland (Hoek van Holland). They were very excited because this was their first time playing abroad (at least for Si and Merv). Simon had a bad cold and kept sniffing all day.
We showed them around The Hague and then got to our club home to set up the equipment. The very same London City gear that we had been using for our own gigs was now going to be used by this trio from England....what more should I say??? The atmosphere that night was one of excitement and anticipation. The very small venue was packed and off they were....to what later was going to be a historical gig (at least in my book). I had made a "new" shirt for the occasion and I had it finished the day before the gig. I "obtained" a shirt from my father and tore off the sleeves. I used green car paint to spray skulls on it. Merv liked the shirt and asked if he could have it. No problem! He wore that same shirt during the photo shoot for the 7" that I'm offering for sale here on eBay. Have a close look and you can see some of that paint. As a bonus you will receive an original black/white photograph that was shot that very same night. It has the same height as the 7" and 2/3 of the width.
The record is MINT and has never been played. The sleeve however shows a little ring wear and a slight bending in the corner, because it has been in a pile for a long time, also there's a little spot above Merv's head.
Of course (or by the way, in case you haven't figured it out yet) this is Cat Machine FREAK 001 from 1984 and features Robot Riot, Sweet Money and the very same Frustration that was on the afore mentioned cassette tape. Also, in case you are interested, a lot of records from that era contained writings on the dead grooved at the end of the record. This one has "Maniac Mechanical Menaces" written on one side. Enough writing......should you have questions, just mail me. The record is rare and the picture is even rarer, so I have (and this is an exception for me) put a (reasonable) reserve on it! Actually, I used to have a copy that was signed by Si, Merv & Steve, but gave that one away a long time ago, because I thought I had another signed copy somewhere :-((( (which turned out to be untrue)
Call it rockabilly, call it neo-rockabilly, call it psychobilly, I don't care......I just love it!!
