This handsome LP - in a "Red Stereo" jacket - from Deutsche Grammophon (SLPM 138 127, German pressing, AH tulip label, stereo, original inner sleeve included, sample copy) features conductor Ferenc Fricsay and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s magnificent account of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor Op. 95 “From the New World”, recorded in the warm and spacious acoustics of Jesus Christus-Kirche, Berlin, on 5 October 1959.

Wrote the outstanding writer and editor David Hurwitz for ClassicsToday:

“A classic! Fricsay's "New World" remains one of the most passionate and spontaneous available. Its noteworthy features include a really dramatic opening movement, a gorgeously sung Largo, a sharply rhythmic scherzo, and a grandly imposing finale sporting a couple of hugely exciting climaxes. Like few others, Fricsay had the secret of communicating a very wide-ranging flexibility of tempo without compromising rhythmic security or the long melodic line. You can hear this very clearly in the symphony's first movement, from the second subject on through the development and up to the recapitulation. This performance hasn't dated a bit, either interpretively or sonically, and there have been quite a few competitors since.”

There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in German, English, and French. The striking cover photo of Fricsay is was taken by Werner Neumeister, Munich. The reverse side of the jacket also carries the publication date, given as 9/64.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor corner wear, as well as light shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
