This fascinating and rare LP from Decca (DL 9541, US pressing / heavy flat vinyl, gold label, mono) features the great Joseph Fuchs’s pioneering accounts of Walter Piston’s Sonata for Violin and Piano and Nicholas Lopatnikoff’s Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano Op. 32, both recorded with the splendid pianist Artur Balsam on 27 March 1951.

Both works are marvelously inventive pieces, masterfully crafted and imbued with haunting melodies. One can only hope that Fuch’s entire discography will see re-release one day.

There are erudite and eloquent notes on the reverse side of the jacket by William Flanagan. The striking cover art was designed by Erik Nitsche.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is GOOD. The only real flaw consists of a noticeable water stain along the open edge of the jacket. There is also a minor 1/2” seamsplit to the lower-right corner and some edgeweaer. However, the jacket remains solid and presentation worthy – not quite a collector’s copy, but still a quite decent one.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
