This week features a really nice curated slab of rare funk, soul lp's from the "classic golden era" or as Thes One put it "Vietnam War Era", we have a handful pre-dating 1967, the vast majority being concentrated in the early 70's, beginning with a very nice OG 1st press of the legendary 1973 GSF Records lp "Skull Snaps", a minty Funkadelic legendary Psych-Funk original 1970 Westbound lp "Free Your Mind and Your A** Will Follow", Allen Toussaint's 1975 Conceptual Psychedelic Funk masterpiece rarity "Southern Nights" lp, the insanely rare Hawaiian Private Press 1970 lp by Gordon Broad (Heavy Soul/Funk!), an unknown South Korean Psych Funk lp on Jigu Records, the first 3 Sylvers lp's on Pride, yep "I, II, and III", James Brown "The Payback" original double lp, Jimmy Castor Bunch "It's Just Begun" - minty fresh, everything from New Birth, Ace Spectrum, White Heat, some badddd rare heavy open drum breaks, instrumental rare-groove style funk, CCM Funk / Psych Funk Rock "First Gear 1972 Myrrh lp" for example....Lorraine Ellison's original OG 1st press 1969 "Stay With Me" on Warner Bros.-Seven Arts Records (not the 1971 version that is more common, and on thinner vinyl!!), we got heavy representatives on labels from ATCO, Hot Wax, Buddah, Cadet, Westbound, AVCO, All Platinum, RCA, Invictus, Gordy, Playboy, MCA, Atlantic, Pride MGM, Capitol, to Private Press world, and so much more :)

Sleeve Grade:  VG+ (Original Unipak style gatefold, light shelf wear, a crinkle here and there, remarkably solid, anyone familiar with the Westbound Unipak's know they are so prone to tearing, splitting, etc., and this one here has none of those structural defects, never seen an original copy this sharp, a fully structurally solid/intact, with crisp graphics, text, the most minor of cosmetic shelf wear would comparatively be an EX, but beyond comparative, VG+ is a thorough conservative grade, see photos!)
Year / Label / Catalogue #:   1970  /  Westbound Records  /  WB-2001 Stereo  (1st press, "Terre Haute" pressing, stereo, "GM East Pet Detroit Milan" in deadwax, text format characteristics, identifiers match up as very 1st 1970 "Terre Haute" pressing!)
Brief Comments: Gorgeous original pressing of the ultra-rare second Funkadelic record, released at the end of July in 1970, (the first Funkadelic, "s/t" was released February 24th 1970), in many ways this is the entrance to the decade for them, the first lp to be recorded in 1970, and it takes things into a further, deeper, psychedelic direction, into entirely uncharted territory, which would continue, culminate on 1971 "Maggot Brain", before a beginning transformative era (with Bootsy, "House Guests" coming abroad) seeing "America Eats It's Young" double album, "Cosmic Slop", into the more P. Funk emergence with the 1974 "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On". 
It's important to understand the 1st Funkadelic "S/T" lp, is largely Clinton & group borrowing heavily from Sly & The Family Stone (during live performances in 1968, 1969, doing covers of Sly interspersed with originals was common), after all Sly & The Family Stone completely altered the entire landscape of soul/funk in 1967, with the debut "A Whole New Thing" lp, a commercial flop, but one near every important soul / funk, burgeoning soul/funk artist bought a copy of (the Velvet Underground debut, of Rare Groove / Soul Funk), it was the West Coast bringing something entirely new, a mixture of soul, funk, psychedelic rock, leaving behind stock clichés, and arguably that album on Epic, changed not just soul/funk, but by influence, musical - culture osmosis, the landscape of music in the way Bitches Brew, Are You Experienced?, Black Sabbath, etc. would. James Brown slowly introduced ideas, concepts, recognizing it was the future, and so did New Jersey soul man, George Clinton, in crafting the first Funkadelic self-titled lp, he took heavily from Sly & The Family Stone, the recent Psychedelic excursions of Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry on Chess / Checker (not to mention Jimi Hendrix!), and also from the recent jazz-rock field (an underacknowledged influence, that would again crop up on "America Eat's It's Young, Cosmic Slop, On The Verge, era), by having some tracks stretch out, basically the debut Funkadelic lp, (which is a great album, amazing, heavy drum breaks, a top notch lp!), was an extension of 1967 Sly, and 1967 Jimi Hendrix, it wasn't ground-breaking, but there was glimpses, that Funkadelic was on the verge of becoming truly "Groundbreaking", and I will add, even if the very 1st was the only lp Funkadelic ever did, it'd still be a classic, it's not to put it down, but to set up what's going to happen next:
But that first requires a brief survey of the field in 1970, no one was going to out "Funk" James Brown, with the possible exceptions of Kool & The Gang, and The Meters. Norman Whitfield (this is an important distinction) injected Psychedelia into Soul, a groundbreaking sonic result that would see incredible variations of the same formula as late as the mid-70's(!), and we really have to go back to the Isley Brothers. Yep, the group from Cincinnati, OH, that a young Hendrix got his start in for a period of time, learned a lot from those 3 brothers....one of the most criminally underrecognized albums, is the first Isley Brothers lp on RCA "Shout" (recall the byline above the RCA victor on the front cover reads "Rock! Brother), the Isley Brothers in 1959, had perfected a synthesis of Jump Blues, R&B, Rock N' Roll, Gospel (The Isley Brothers began as kids, performing at Churches around the Cincy, OH, into Kentucky area), and stripped down soul. The lp "Shout", the Isley's debut, in 1959, had not conceded the African-American originated Rock to white Rock N' Rollers, it was the most advanced album of it's era, (first off, don't bother with the mono, the Living Stereo is the one you want, it's not processed stereo, it's dual-track, the same technique of recording used on RCA's classical lp's, which is why a Living Stereo "Witches Brew" goes for $600, and a Mono (both first press!) goes for maybe $40?). Jimi Hendrix injected Rock N' Roll, R&B into Psychedelia, with his own twist, lyrically, sonically of course. Sly & The Family Stone until "Stand" with the nearly 14 minute psychedelic funk "Sex Machine" (a shot across the brow to James Brown*) would be the most psychedelic, (April 1969) since the first lp, the middle two, were more "commercial", Sly & The Family Stone adopted a sort of POPULAR rock that was Psychedelic, really Sgt. Pepper's era Beatles, into "Dance To The Music" -(a very popular, still single length, Popular Rock a la Beatles mixed into Soul/Funk). Otis Redding was the Southern Sam Cooke, injecting Southern R&B, Gospel - by osmosis, it was ubiquitous to the region, into a not quite but almost Northern Soul sound, like Cooke, he tragically died too young, and Cooke injected Jazz into R&B (also Rock N' Roll elements of say Rosetta Tharpe, and Gospel influence later on, especially in the seminal "A Change Is Gonna Come"), practically creating the beginning of capital S "Soul" on his own, with Gordy taking the template, but smoothing it out, Berry was ready to concede "Rock N' Roll", in favor of progressing into this nascent "Soul".
George Clinton, hailing from New Jersey, saw Stang, with newly hired maven George Kerr turbo-charging* soul into the sweet soul of NJ for the 70's (*if you get that pun, message me for a cool surprise!), there was also the symphonic sweet soul of Philly emerging dominate in it's field, with Thom Bell, MFSB, and co, seen in the Delfonics early lp's. Isaac Hayes at Stax, had injected a different formulation of Psychedelia, Funk into Soul with his seminal 1969 "Hot Buttered Soul" lp, exemplified by the 12 minute long version of "Walk On By". 

Clinton had the right timing, just as Motown was beginning to make a relocation to Los Angeles, Armen Boladian was one of several ready to fill the Detroit void, with "Westbound" (and "Eastbound", sub-labels, etc.), Clinton knew there was no chance of Funkadelic or Parliament breaking out of the New Jersey Sylvia Robinson - George Kerr umbrella, he convinced Boladian that Westbound needed Funkadelic (hedging his bets, he convinced heavily Detroit adjacent Invictus it needed Parliament! Which is how September 1970 "Osmium" got released), Boladian having heard, seen them, agreed, and invested heavily into them, despite the first Funkadelic being a flop, commercially, that was merely round 1, because Clinton & Funkadelic at large, knew they weren't going to out Sly the Family Stone, or Out Funk James Brown (who in 1970, making his break to his own People imprint on Polydor, hired David Matthews to inject psychedelia, feeling the sting from Sly's "Sex Machine"), and although Clinton himself came from a background more conducive to quintessential New Jersey / Philly harmony Sweet Soul, that was not the field, he wasn't going to out R&B / Symphonic Psychedelia of Isaac Hayes, nor the formula of injecting Psychedelia into Soul / Funk like Whitfield.
George Clinton, and Funkadelic, instead, decided if the trend of conceding "Rock" thoroughly to whites, which was exponential from 1964 and on, with Jimi Hendrix disrupting it for a time....Then Funkadelic (literally a portmanteau of "Funk" & "Psychedelic") was going to inject heavy Funk, into cutting-edge Psychedelia, the strain coming from Blue Cheer. They were going to make the heaviest, of heavy metal records, with a strong Funk basis, this one right here, recorded during 1970, "Free Your Mind, And Your Ass Will Follow", a masterpiece that cuts every bit as heavy as Black Sabbath's debut, or Budgie's first lp on Kapp (listen to the 10 minute title track, "I Wanna Know If It's Good To You?" is heavy metal of the era, injected with Funk, it's Kool & The Gang meets Tony Iommi), far more heavy than Sly & The Family Stone to the date (Stone would veer into a new darker, early electronic sound, for "There's A Riot"!), the synthesis was so seamless, was it funk, psychedelic, rock, what was it? Clinton being incredibly brilliant supplied the answer that birthed a Universe: "A Parliafunkadelicment Thang", that's what the sound was, later shorted to "P. Funk", it was the sound you couldn't find anywhere else, maybe close but not quite, maybe.... and the singles from the lp sold incredibly well (the LP did not, it would be repressed in 1974, but the original 1970 lp had relatively modest sales, same with Maggot Brain, the 1974 repressing, a great one, sold far more copies, the singles also did well), especially from a nascent upstart label in "Westbound". 
"Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow", did what the Isley Brothers 1959 "Shout" did, of course further, as times change, technological i.e. recording advances.... It was the first true Funkadelic record to be sui generis (it's impact on Osmium's sound, released in September, a couple months after, cannot be understated), there is a paean, holdover to R&B of late 60's style, on B3 "Some Move", the shortest cut clocking in at 2:55. The influence of Gospel, is sort of the halo surrounding it, differentiating it, "Eulogy and Light", this influence would continue on Maggot Brain in 1971.... 
This is the album that showed the world, their peers, the music press, anyone with ears, that Funkadelic was more than an East Coast edition of Sly & The Family, as good as that first self-titled album is.... Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow, had it all, "Funky Dollar Bill" - giving socio-political commentary, but in the Parliafunkadelicment Thang way! (it's Charting at 92 as an album, is technically true, but it was not nearly the commercial success of anything James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, Kool & The Gang even, otherwise it would be a common album, which we know the original is anything but a common album, it's rare as hen's teeth, all I'm going to say, is Armen Boladian knew how to work the system, the guy was a hustler, shrewd, and determined, Morris Levy crossed with the Ertegun brothers of Atlantic and dashes of Henry Stone). 
It didn't just break new ground, it tore apart the old concrete, ripping high-way lengths of asphalt along the way! Jimi Hendrix, still alive at the time, was plotting with Miles Davis, both eager to blow the lid off, looking to bury Sly, it was after "Free Your Mind", Hendrix knew they couldn't out-Psych in a heavy metal sense, Funkadelic, but the mixture of jazz-fusion, Psychedelia (reportedly Gil Evans was in these nascent conversations, ready to arrange / conduct, and God only knows what we missed out on, an album that we'd all know the name of, ubiquitous, likely), studio magic, left-field, it might have been "Can" before Can! Tragically Hendrix died a few days before the release of "Osmium" under Parliament, on Invictus..... Whitfield was only strengthening his mastery of Psychedelic Soul, Funk blend, satisfied to carve his creative, artistic, lucrative niche. James Brown added musicians who ironically would depart for P. Funk, i.e. Bootsy baby! 
Every peer, by the end months of 1970, knew with "Free Your Mind...", (the tragic passing of Jimi Hendrix), that Funkadelic was the cutting-edge group, another record out of Detroit, by the name of "What's Going On", - Marvin Gaye in 1971 would also rip off the concrete, Sly & The Family Stone with dark electronic sounds, popular, but socio-political, cutting edge on "There's A Riot Going On" in 1971. In 1973 James Brown would take the throne of "capital F" Funk with "The Payback" double album (especially burning on Funkadelic, because "America Eats It's Young" was a flop for them at the time, especially criticized for it's double-album length, without bringing double-album energy, I can see that point, but it aged better, still not "The Payback" of course!).
Maggot Brain, the natural follow-up companion to "Free Your Mind..." -(Chapter 2 in so so many ways), built on Free Your Mind, rid itself of any older 60's R&B traces, and went (with all due respect to my hero, legendary Jimi Hendrix) further than Jimi. Eddie Hazel's guitar playing went to a new plane, that to this day has rarely had visitors, on the title track....If pressed, I'd say the greatest recorded electric guitar playing we've ever witnessed..... As much as Maggot Brain was building off "Free Your Mind", to just replicate it, isn't possible, the burrowing into deeper funk, heavy metal, even jazz (so many shots across the brow!), but it wouldn't be the same after, it transformed, into P.Funk, a rocky transition at first, but became it's own sub-genre! 
Had "Free Your Mind", not come, i.e. a "Funkadelic - self titled" part 2, we'd be talking about George Clinton as an obscure, fascinating figure, there'd be no P.Funk. The countless albums, countless artists, pushing into new boundaries due to "Free Your Mind", might not have ever reached the level they did. There would be no Eddie Hazel "changing yo life" level guitar solo on Maggot Brain, because it wouldn't exist. 
This was the break, as The Verve from their 1995 "A Northern Soul" lp, off a track might say "it's a new decade, this is the sound of the music we make" -(The Verve listened to Funkadelic's Free Your Mind, and Maggot Brain over and over, well crafting that LP, it just keeps coming!).
James Brown, Allen Toussaint, Norman Whitfield, McKinley Jackson, Henry Stone a la Miami umbrella (James Knight & The Butlers, even Little Beaver, Blowfly alter ego of Clarence Reid, that's Funkadelic reach for you), Isaac Hayes, Thom Bell, Willie Mitchell, Clarence Avant (Sussex, another scrappy Detroit label tryna fill a void: Bill Withers was the Soul/Funk injected into Rock flip of Funkadelic, Sixto Rodriguez was Soul into Psychedelia the inverse formula of Norman Whitfield, but the darker, deeper, Gospel-like edges, Funkadelic influenced), the biggest players, arrangers, musicians, composers, singers, took note, Marvin Gaye released "What's Going On", not Funkadelic inspired, but the level of artistry, Gaye certainly wanted to bring that and more, succeeding of course! 
Mandrill, War, who had Latin Rhythms interposed with soul/funk, psychedelia, only pushed further, both nailing it....
There's no Magnum "Fully Loaded", or Carl Sherlock Holmes "Soulful Investigations" without "Free Your Mind", because that's exactly what it did. Funkadelic freed an artistic creativity, erasing barriers, in a similar way Miles was doing in Jazz, and ushering in a new era, the JB's got funkier, Kool & The Gang got jazzier, more synthesizers, more unique arrangements.
Funkadelic touched, and cleared the way, for that ass to follow, with "Free Your Mind", an album whose influence is so far-reaching, we still are investigating (soulful investigations...), of course sampled on some of the dopest hip-hop beats ("I Wanna Know If It's Good To You", just loop the intro, and it sounds DJ Muggs, Cypress Hill Black Sunday era, Temples Of Boom ready!).
I think it's important to say, hype and excitement, are different. Hype is fakin' jax, and not the dope Pete Rock track, whereas Excitement, is genuine, I hope that shows..... Because this album is one I literally could talk your ear off, probably jumping up and down for hours until you tell me to knock it off, no joke! (I don't do Hype, the excitement is always coming off the music, I leave Hype to those that think they need it, and I know people are gonna see it, my hope is people will see the real excitement, the way I know I see from people like Dante Carfagna, Thes One, Gilles Peterson, Andre Torres, Logan Melissa aka "Height 5'7", Questlove - I'm nowhere near being anywhere near these incredible people, Men and Women I admire greatly (but I can say, I'll never aspire to be Egon, hate me for it, but along with Supreme - him to a smaller degree, he's an egomaniac, but relatively harmless, the same can't be said for Egon, who is, has been sued for the level of shady sh*t, and having an ego the size of the Himalaya's, business practices that would make exploitative adult film producers blush, and large portions of a record collection built around narcisisstic deception.... Eothen Alapatt, I've never personally met, but not a single person I've personally met who has personally met him, has ever recounted anything less than almost comically mendacious tales, the $ missing from J Dilla's estate, Madlib, countless legendary musicians who put trust into him, giving up their collections for pennies based on a promise of new fame that Egon knows he cannot deliver at the levels he nakedly implies, even explicitly...Stanton Davis, for one....)
Gilles Peterson never needed hype, nor Andre Torres, nor Logan Melissa (to anyone saying her modeling is a "thirst trap", it's so far from the truth, she is a genius visual artist, a model in the truest sense, and to a person, *I've never met her, - but anyone I know personally that has, will tell you she is the most beautiful generous thoughtful soul, an absolutely brilliant genius, whose true love for vinyl, the music, is infectious on the real!), Thes One & Questlove couldn't fake it because it's impossible! That's just not in their bones, they couldn't if you offered a million dollars, they are too real...Dante Carfagna is one of the deepest, humble, kind, immensely curious, deep divers - the only hype my brother has is records with the OG hype sticker!
I may never be half of any one of these folks, but in many ways, you are who you look up to, or sadly, for some, it's who is teaching you to look down, now if I'm shy I might look down at the floor, but I hope when I raise my head to greet you like family in this thing of ours, you'll be able to see whatever it is in me, the real, and whatever it is, for better or worse. I'll always strive to be better, to the people, because that's really all we have.... It's why we create, to both know and be known, to explain ourselves, and seek understanding, to build the bridges that last longer through the ages than mere steel or concreate....I say it with love, and to everyone, George Clinton, Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, everyone who was involved, worked on "Free Your Mind...", your love, your soul is forever fused in this masterpiece, and that giving of love, is a gift to the human family, that will echo throughout the ages, it already does, and Love to you all, anyone reading this :)
Beautiful OG 1st press, may it go to a loving home, to keep that soul power, that beauty of spirit, circulating, to another soul to excite, inspire, and reach in, as it has done for me, and real talk, if it goes for $6, or $6 bazillion, that is not where my mind is, because this is heart to heart, the music is priceless, and it's an honor to play a humble, tiny role, in being able to send that along, that is a feeling fam, that you can't attach no funky dollar bill to! The last word, of the last track title, B4, is "Light", I want this to be the Light in your life, that it has been for me, for 10+ years now....

For our record grading, we stand by the merits outlined in the scale below, anything VG or below will have a detailed explanation in brackets next to the grade.
For sleeves, we will mention anytime there is split, or defect not visible in the photos in brackets next to the grade, otherwise we refer to the photos for the merit of the grade. Of course any questions, concerns, are always welcome :) 
Our media grading scale is as follows: [*Quick note, our VPI is still in storage on the other side of the US, we do brush clean many  items carefully, but we have to prioritize, we won't leave anyone stranded with a filthy record, only "filthy" good! We don't factor dust particles into the grading]
NM = Essentially a pristine album, like new, rarely used.
EX = Under bright light if there is any scuffs or mark, which will be inaudible, most collectors and sellers would tend to consider it closer to NM, EX is also the grade others might call VG++ under the same level of conservative scrutiny.
VG+ = More then a small handful of scuffs, light marks, nothing feelable, will have high-gloss, a thoroughly enjoyable copy that may only have tiny moments of barely perceptible surface noise overpowered by the music. Our VG+ will satisfy the vast majority of collectors as a nice keeper copy, as collector's ourselves for nearly two decades, this grade is aimed to be a great keeper. Note if say the record has a light DNAP warp, but otherwise is NM, we will automatically put it to VG+ and detail that. Another scenario is if a copy plays at a solid EX, but visually is VG, the composite grade will be VG+, and detailed as such.
VG = More hairlines, more marks, maybe a few visible scratches, no more then two feelable scratches (which automatically lowers to VG-), there likely will be surface noise, but will play through, still being an enjoyable copy, the audio quality will satisfy most collector's (the golden rule: if it doesn't satisfy us, it won't be VG), if a record is otherwise EX, but has a slight momentary skip, where 99% of the record is EX, we will note that, and put it at VG. Usually will retain a nice gloss.
VG- = More Scratches than VG, surface noise will jump out more, it be overpowered for longer stretches, or compete with the music in places, it will likely play all the way through on most turntables, a copy that you can still get a decent play enjoyment from.
G+ = Lots of scratches, deeper ones, surface noise now mostly overpowers or competes with the music. It may skip in some places. We don't tend to sell G+ copies, unless the rarity is so great, and that will be precisely detailed.
Thrashed = Pretty much a "Theoretical Grade" for us, it be for all intents & purposes virtually unplayable, it would be for display purposes, or perhaps if you needed the cover but not the record. It's "theoretical" because so far we haven't sold or identified anything intended to sell at this bottom level.

Default shipping is USPS media mail, USPS International mail. If you prefer a different carrier, or expedited shipping, please message us before payment, so we can set up the invoice for you :)
We have it set to 5 day shipping / handling time, as a just in case, typically about 98.7% of our orders are shipped out the day of payment (first day the post office is open), with the vast majority being the second day. We'll message on the extraordinary off-chance if doesn't go out on Tuesday (our auctions mostly ending on Saturdays, Sundays), with the reason and day it will go out, so far that's only happened once on a giant order, and all was well.
