ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This superb LP from Melodiya (33D 05800-01, Soviet pressing, pink label, mono) features Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Berlin Philharmonic’s powerfully hewn and unforgettable account of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor Op. 67, recorded “live” in June 1943, and still among the greatest performances of this work every captured on record. It boasts an extraordinary frisson and tension with the BPO on blazing, trenchant form throughout.
This Beethoven Fifth, along with the conductor’s other war-time recordings, remain among Furtwangler’s most inspired performances, and as a set they are perhaps the most powerful musical documents of the war period, of shattering intensity, in consistently fine sound, among the first ‘taped’ recordings of the kind, most supervised by the conductor’s personal Tonnmeister, Dr. Friedrich Schnapp. Absconded by the Soviet Forces at the end of the war, and housed by Moscow Radio, the masters were finally repatriated to Germany, returning to their home at Sender Freies Berlin on October 15, 1987. This Beethoven Fifth was among those fabled masters and the sound here in this Soviet pressing is truly outstanding.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is a small tear to the leading edge of the front panel, bumping/wear at corners, and discoloration/ringwear to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive – overall, this rates as a decent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite good. However, those wanting CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
