ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and very rare LP from La Voix de son Maitre (FALP 543, French pressing, red/white semi-circle label, mono – no stereo edition exists, dowel spine) features Wilhelm Furtwängler's extraordinary account of Brahms's Symphony No. 3 in F Major Op. 90, recorded 'live' with the Berlin Philharmonic at Titania Palast, Berlin on 18 December 1949.
Furtwangler's reading is imbued with a visionary quality, the BPO responding with great nobility and depth of feeling, their performance wonderfully rich and textured. This is exalted conducting and orchestral playing by any measure – one of the great Brahms Thirds on disc.
Incidentally, the striking cover photo of Furtwangler is credited to Camera Press, London. The superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in French only, were written by Frédérick Goldbeck.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the "baguette"-style jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping/wear at corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the dowel spine is EXCELLENT. There is some slight usual wear with age, but no seamsplits, markings, or other faults. The dowel is perfectly intact and the gilt writing along the spine perfectly legible.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although there is some occasional light surface noise, as well as some soft tics in the opening of the slow movement (perhaps for 20 seconds), in general the playback is quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
