This beautiful LP from Italian HMV · La Voce del Padrone (QALP 10086, Italian pressing, red/silver semi-circle label – ED1, mono, glossy laminated flipback jacket) features Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Vienna Philharmonic's powerful account of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor Op. 67, recorded in the Musikvereinsaal on 28 February and 1 March 1954 (producer: Lawrence Collingwood / engineer: Francis Dillnutt) – a stunning account.
Wrote John Ardoin in his indispensible The Furtwängler Record:
"Though the performance is very stately, Furtwangler nonetheless manages here to draw a greater intensity from the Viennese and to create a greater linear concentration (especially on bass lines) than in Stockholm [also with the VPO, in 1950]...and the finale is delivered with an extremely deliberate and majestic stride; even its coda is cooled a few degrees."
There are fine liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Italian only. The striking cover art is similarly uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the glossy laminated flipback jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a small tear to the open edge, as well as minor bumping at corners and discoloration. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains excellent. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
Note: A former owner has pasted an Itallian postage stamp of Furtwangler onto the label of Side 1 (obscuring the Nipper artwork), but it was carefully done and looks handsome.
