Recorded in 1967, Gabor Szabo’s Jazz Raga still sounds as intoxicatingly fresh and wholly original as it did during those heady musically explorative times.  People have always debated whether Jazz Raga is a jazz record or a rock record, though no one will disagree that it’s an important record ... as it very well may have been the first jazz rock hybrid, making it the first jazz fusion album, coming out several years before Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, or what Santana did on Abraxas, and anything closely resembling what Herbie Hancock would later become know for.

The album feels unscripted, as if he’s in your living room rattling off notes in a manner that an artist sketches, where before your very eyes/ears, there’s a fully fleshed out brilliant drawing, or in this case song, sitting in front of you; leaving you to scratch your head wondering how in the world he got from A to Z in an almost magical manner.  The most wonderful aspect of Szabro’s music is that there are no edges crashing up against each other, simply an infusion of layer upon layer of musical chords that weave their way into a dream state of nearly uncontrolled joy.

I find myself wanting to distance myself from the word ‘psychedelic’, however, coming from the mid 60’s steeped with eastern influences, and here on Jazz Raga, covering “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones, and on his live album The Beatles’ “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” the man has been deeply influenced by the changing times and the psychedelic counterculture.  There are those who will say that they wish that he’d broken out a bit more, or pushed the boundaries, but that’s the charm of Jazz Raga, it’s held in check when it comes to the notion of soaring, yet he flies free when it comes to presentation.  Szabo is keenly aware of his ideas, especially when one considers the meaning of Raja where the origins are taken from the Hebrew and Arabic, though predominantly used in Russian, Arabic, English, and Indian, with its roots meaning ‘hope’.  With this meaning in mind, Szabo certainly did bring hope to one of the most important periods of the last hundred years, and he did so with a calculated gentle hand that to this day, is nothing less than mesmerizing

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (visible and feelable scratch on first two tracks on side B will probably produce some clicks and pops).

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(e)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).   Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam

-         Front cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
