· DILLARD AND CLARK (DOUG DILLARD OF THE DILLARDS, AND GENE CLARK OF THE BYRDS, WITH PRACTICALLY THE ENTIRE DILLARDS LINEUP; THREE FIFTHS OF THE BYRDS (CLARK, HILLMAN AND CLARKE) AND INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OF THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS AND EAGLES) - FANTASTIC EXPEDITION OF DILLARD AND CLARK - ORIGINAL 1968 A & M RECORDS STEREO LP SP-4158.
· ORIGINAL US PRESSING
· *** WHITE LABEL PROMO ***
· *** IN ADDITION, TWO PROMOTIONAL STICKERS ON THE COVER CLEARLY IDENTIFY THE ITEM AS PROMOTIONAL ***
· ORIGINAL A&M LABEL, LATE ‘60s STYLE, WHITE PROMO VERSION
· VERY RARE WEST COAST PRESSING (MONARCH PRESSING PLANT, LOS ANGELES)
· RARE PROMO-ONLY CSG MASTERING WITH DIFFERENT MIXES
· HOW IS THIS PROMO-ONLY MASTERING DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR, COMMERCIALLY RELEASED VERSION OF THIS ALBUM? HERE’S HOW: THIS PRESSING WAS MADE FROM THE PROMO-ONLY STAMPERS WHICH UTILIZED THE SO-CALLED “CSG PROCESS” (SEE THE GOLD LABEL ON THE COVER) AND WERE NEVER INTENDED FOR THE REGULAR, COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF THIS TITLE. FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ‘CSG’ PROCESS, THIS WAS A SHORT-LIVED NOVELTY PRODUCTION METHOD WHICH ALLOWED SOME LABELS (NOTABLY A&M) TO CUT DOWN ON THEIR PRODUCTION COSTS BY CEASING THE PRODUCTION OF THE CUSTOM (PROMO-ONLY) MONO PRESSINGS INTENDED FOR RADIO STATIONS ONLY. THE ‘CSG’ PROMO PRESSINGS ALLOWED THE RADIO STATIONS TO SWITCH FROM AM-UNFRIENDLY STEREO TO AM-FRIENDLY MONO WITH THE SIMPLE FLICK OF THE STEREO-TO-MONO CONVERTER SWITCH. IN ORDER TO ENABLE MONO (AM) BROADCAST, THE BOTTOM PART OF THE FREQUENCY RANGE (RHYTHM SECTION) HAD TO BE BOOSTED IN ORDER TO ENHANCE THE RADIO TRANSMISSION OVER AM WAVES; IN SHORT, CSG PRESSINGS HAD SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED LOW END OF THE FREQUENCY RANGE (BASS AND DRUMS). WHILE IT IS DEBATABLE WHETHER THESE CSG PROMOS ARE BETTER OR WORSE THAN COMMERCIAL MIXES (THE PREFERENCES ARE INDIVIDUAL; I PERSONALLY LIKE CSG MIX A LOT), IT IS THE FACT THAT CSG MIXES ARE CLEARLY DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR, COMMERCIALLY RELEASED VERSIONS. THE ONLY WAY – SHORT OF PLAYING THE RECORD – THAT YOU CAN IDENTIFY THE CSG PRESSING IS VISUALLY: THE CSG-PRESSED COPIES HAD “CSG”- PREFIX IN THE MATRIX STAMP, AND A VERY THICK, DENSE, MATTED GROOVES WITH A DISTINCT “FISHBONE” TEXTURE. REGULAR, COMMERCIAL PRESSINGS WERE MORE EVEN AND “FLAT” IN TEXTURE, AND HAD A MUCH MORE GLOSSY, REFLECTIVE SURFACE.
· THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.
· ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)
· THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING
· CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

Gene Clark was the greatest underrated singer/songwriter to emerge from the '60s rock explosion, and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Neil Young. This album, his debut as a duo with virtuoso banjoist/guitarist Doug Dillard, is perhaps his most brilliant recording. Out of the ashes of the Byrds and a brilliant false start of a solo career (the excellent Echoes album), the 1968 Dillard & Clark project found Clark collecting some of his finest material (basically the entire album) and putting it in the familiar context of bluegrass and country, a good year before these elements became vogue in the pop world. But Gene Clark was always ahead of his time. Bookended by two exquisite autobiographical explorations into consciousness -- "Out on the Side" and "Something's Wrong" -- the album's other tracks run from mournful ballad statements such as "Radio Song" to joyous celebrations like "With Care from Someone." There is also a very hot cover of the gospel number "Git It on Brother," which features Chris Hillman on mandolin. Doug Dillard's playing on the record is uniformly excellent. Not only a virtuoso musician, Dillard is a truly smart player who never gets in the way of the songs. Graceful, spellbinding, and tasteful all at the same time. Absolutely essential.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY MATTHEW GREENWALD, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
Classic country-rock album, a very revolutionary work issued at the peak of the back-to-the country revolution of 1968/69. This album is right up there with Byrds' "Sweetheart of Rodeo", Beau Brummels' "Bradley's Farm" or Flying Burrito Brothers' "Gilded Palace of Sin" as one of the most important, and influential specimens of the genre.
Track listing: Out on the side - She darked the sun - Don't come rollin' - Train leaves here this morning - With care from someone - The radio song - Git it on brother (Git in line brother) - In the plan - Something's wrong
THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d) White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4
- Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a slight wavy ("curly") warp across the back panel; thishas absolutely no effect on the record.
- Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)
- Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 4 and 6 inches / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape
- Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the bottom seams and spine
- Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners and another one in another corner (both on the opening side).
- The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side (nothing significant)
- Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the opening side (nothing significant)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
