In 1977 I was GENERATION X's manager. This record was my idea.

After our first "bootleg" single and then putting out our first official record - PERFECT HITS "THE DEMO TAPES" - it was only a matter of time before we released another one.

PERFECT HITS VOL. 2 is the recording for a John Peel session broadcast on 21 July 1977. The four tracks are Rock On, No No No, Gimme Some Truth and From The Heart.

The session was recorded at BBC Studios in Maida Vale. The engineer set the EQ for what was standard in recording rock bands, and I recall making him dial out most of the echo on the drums so they sounded live. Then we wanted the guitars to sound big and nasty...it was fun and the studio guys got into it with us. Musician Union rules frowned on anything other than a live performance but we ignored that.

I was a big fan of dub, and incessant playing of Joe Gibbs, Lee Perry and Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" had infected the band. So we added some dub effects to "Rock On" in the mix.

"Gimme Some Truth" was Billy's idea. He was a John Lennon fan and had been listening to the first two solo albums. (The first one is about as punk as it gets - really raw and elemental.) Tony's rap at the end was spontaneous - he just started spouting it during one of the takes. At the time there was a lot of sniping at the band for not being "proper punks" and following the rules - which was hilarious to us since the point of Punk was that there were no rules, but we still felt backed into a corner. Tony had been there with Mick Jones since before even the first stirrings of London SS, so he knew every secret and hypocritical remark. His commentary sounded perfect so he took a few minutes to think it out and then went in and put it down as an overdub.

After the session aired on the John Peel and was well received, we pressed this single.

The matrix numbers are: A-side - GX - 2 A and ROCK ON scratched into the spiral / GX - 2B

We pressed 100 copies.

As part of the sale I will include a Letter of Provenance telling the story of how the record was made and guaranteeing its originality.

The record has NEVER BEEN PLAYED. It is in MINT condition. There are no marks and no scratches. The label is flawless, with no marks of any kind. There are no spindle marks.
