Label Conditions: Both immaculate and highly attractive with only one spindle trace on side one and struggling to find any on side two. Certainly amongst the best pair of hatters I have ever seen on this classic prog title with rich, deep fresh colour.

Brief Info: The fourth Genesis album and third on Charisma, this one was not issued on the pink label, this being the first B&C credited large hatter original. A top quality album it is too, by now the band were fast gaining a cult following within the progressive market. Gabriel’s on-stage theatricals were getting more dramatic and the music was getting more complex and adventurous. ‘Foxtrot’ includes the live stage favourite in the very long ‘Supper’s Ready’ which occupies most of side two and is broken into seven segments. It starts off with the classic ‘Watcher of the Skies’ and there is no filler material on this classic prog set. Beautifully packaged too with a very fine cover and this vintage copy includes the original Charisma inner bag too – albeit with some rubbing to one edge. A clean record, some fine surface marks but with lovely clean sound, it is likely to please many Genesis fans.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format that is textured front and back (the inside is smooth). Like the labels, this cover has the original B&C credits and was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. This one has the spine text in red and reading vertically (please see my close-ups of this detail). The original ‘Charisma puts a little colour in our cheeks’ promotional inner sleeve is also included.

Cover Front: A little gentle rubbing to the top but it hardly even shows. Clean and attractive with fantastic artwork. The texturing has no speckle and few marks at all. A couple of fine creases on the spine but little else. No sticker marks and just a little small rubbing to a couple of the corner tips that few avoid.

Cover Back: Similar to the front with no ring wear, which is always a bonus. A fairly fine vertical crease near the spine has very modest visibility with no rink removal or cracking.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made and very strong and attractive.

Top Edges: A few small chips with any rubbing light and little. Both quite straight as well.

Bottom Edges: Light, patchy rubbing, a little more near towards the corners. These storage edges rarely remain totally unscathed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring tiny and light, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine too with few traces of rubbing to the vulnerable surface apart from the very ends, and this only small. Quite solid but with a fine near central crease that stops it being perfectly straight. Minimal compression and folded quite scare. All text, in red ink, which unusually reads downwards, is near perfect with barely any traces of wear and it has remained clean and barely aged at all. A couple of tiny surface chips but most all of the artwork intact with fine colour retained. The vertical red text is important to this first issue.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs, most on the spine top but hardly major. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult indeed to find much better. Just enough to remind of it’s 40-year-old age, but overall, a lovely cover. Not quite for the highly discerning, but it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: one edge has scuffed, that apart it would be graded EX++. Not a lot else to really fault bar this as can be seen. Clean, very fresh and brightly coloured with barely any creases and all edges solid and intact, these were never lined and prone to splits – this has NO repairs. Only the earliest examples of this album included this lovely Charisma inner which was always highly prone to ringwear which this has somehow avoided. Even the top recessed opening is almost pristine. The ink loss on this one edge, both sides, is an issue of course, but this inner is so often missing altogether, and this is still a very fine example.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Under light, some very fine surface marks but purely superficial and with no audio effect at all. There are no penetrating scratches on this record. Visually a nice record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Gabriel-era Genesis record plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault, and Genesis albums are never easy on vinyl with many very quiet passages and complex structured music. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, very gentle, few and faint and little unwanted registered at all, this too on very sensitive equpment listed further down. An exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Few records of this type will ever play ‘silent’ throughout, the format barely allows it and pressing quality from the 70s onwards was seldom 1960s standard. Charisma records were also quite variable in pressing quality sometimes with invisible pressing sounds and even distortions – none were heard on this splendid copy. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played only modestly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this prog classic. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and is highly recommended – for clean sound, this will take some beating.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
