Label Conditions: Both clean, quite fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Traces of dulling when viewed under angled light, but both labels are very nice as seen.

Rarity & Info: Very rare: seldom seen or offered with the picture cover as only this pressing included. A non-charting single all over the world, the title song unique to this 45rpm single. The B-side taken from the ‘Nursery Cryme’ album. Issued in 1972 in tiny numbers before the popularity of this legendary prog-rock band took off in 1973 with the ‘Selling England by the Pound’ album. A ‘lost’ Genesis track, and for many fans almost the Holy Grail item to own on vinyl, those familiar with it consider it one of their finest early songs. This is the very first copy I have ever seen. I do not normally sell singles, but when non-album tracks titles show up, it is a different matter. This is a very nice copy as well offering very clean sound with hardly anything to fault. A relatively delicate acoustic song and a real Genesis classic. A little minor wear on the ultra rare picture cover, but nothing remotely serious as explained further down. So a super-rare item for Genesis fans and a rare one for singles collectors – this seldom surfaces for sale.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (or close to). A single unlaminated picture sleeve cover with matt smooth surfaces. The back has two external flipbacks and a deep recessed right edge for removal of the disc. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with B&C credits.

Cover Front: Amongst the rarest of record covers I have ever held, this single picture sleeve is almost legendary for Genesis fans and collectors. The front band picture has only very gently aged, but is still clean, quite fresh and attractive. A little fine creasing near the bottom left corner and traces here-and-there. Some almost mandatory record rim and label area pressing. But very little ink has eroded as can be seen. Quite a difficult and fragile paper sleeve without any real damage, no tears, splits or sticker marks, overall, a very fine and excellent looking front.

Cover Back: All very similar again: both flipbacks are solid, neat and undamaged. The deep left recess opening is neat and crisp with no splits. Mild hint of age, any discolouration being very light and gentle. Note this promotes the first two Charisma albums ‘Trespass’ and ‘Nursery Cryme’.

Top Edge: Ultra thin, a little rubbed, but NO splits or repairs.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal, hardly anything at all in fact, even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine Side: As per the top and bottom edges.

Corners: All quite neat and reasonably crisp for a paper sleeve. Minor tip rubbing and a little creasing. Unless kept in cotton wool, few, if any will survive without some wear to these impossibly fragile areas.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this ultra fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better – find it at all will prove more than challenging in its own right. This highly-prized Genesis rarity should please many, if not most collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or again, close to. A very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy modestly played I feel with any surface marks mostly fine and whispy as mostly seen under angled light, there are NO penetrating stylus scratches, thus this single plays with no pops or noteworthy clicks. Visually an impressive record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This major Genesis rarity plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Charisma always variable, but this 45 pressed by EMI, so quality was more assured. Few available copies (if any can indeed be found) will outperform this quality pressing – the only one to include the picture sleeve – significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – my very first one ever. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
