Label/Format: Charisma – original pink scroll format. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both clean and attractive, but the spindle marks suggest this has been played a number of times. These are fine and faint and only show under light and there is NO ink removal around the hole rim or even chipping and this record remains a snug fit on my LP12 spindle. The original owner put a date of June 72 on side one just below the hole, clearly visible on my scan.

Cat Number: CAS 1052.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 147 grams. A very good weight for any record and above average for it’s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Originals on the pink scroll label are now very scarce and getting genuinely quite rare, especially in anything like decent conditions.

Original Year of Release: 1971, soon to be replaced by the more familiar Mad Hatter repressings.

Brief Info: The band’s third album and second on Charisma. A hard one to find that plays well on the first label, so-much-so, I never have any qualms in offering Hatter pressings. By now the band were fast gaining a cult following within the progressive market. Gabriel’s on-stage theatricals were getting more dramatic and the music was getting more complex and adventurous. This album is beautifully packaged too with a fantastically bizarre, surreal cover. This is a fine example for the more average collector who may not wish to spend a fortune on a pristine original. The labels may indicate a fair number of plays but the playing surfaces are clean and the sound for practically is strong and clean. A tiny few minor sporadic clicks and odd trace of surface sound on the ver quiet passages, but overall this is a pleasing copy that I enjoyed immensely. I am a highly critical listener who does not tolerate unwanted sounds easily, but this offered little to offend me. With Charisma records, I always expect minor blemishes at best and their pressings were often variable in quality. A more than highly respectable all-round copy for those who just enjoy the vinyl experience from a very early issue. More details on conditions below.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High

Cover Grade and Format: Properly graded Very Good+, arguably undergraded as this looks really pleasing to the eye. An unlaminated gatefold format that is textured on both front and back (later ones were smooth). The inside has not texturing. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and of course, having the B&C credits.

Cover Front: A beautiful cover that retains fantastic colour and cleaness with hardly any traces of rubbing and no speckle at all. Clean with no creasing, scuffing or fading. The textured surface is very pronounced and near maximum justice is done to the wonderful artwork. The only minor visible wear being small corner rubs and edge rubbing on the top that just encroaches into view. A lovely, classic progressive rock front cover.

Cover Back: Practically the same as the front with a little more corner and edge rubs, still only small. In all truth, the artwork is so fantastic, the eyes will not be drawn to minor edge blemishes, and that’s the honest truth.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside here at all, both faces look lovely with rich, deep colour.

Top Edges: Moderate, slightly patchy rubbing, the main reason why this is graded down a little (but who wants to look at edges with beautiful main artwork?)

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge, the front being closed.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick, straight, uncompressed and folded very square, both right edges meet up quite closely together and parallel. There is some light, patchy rubbing, far less than the top and bottom edges. But some rubbing has occurred on the album’s title but the band and catalogue number remains almost fully present and intact.

Corners: The corners have rubbed in context to the edges, being moderate+ on the spine and lesser on the right four. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover for sure, the early examples rarely, if ever escape some wear. In context, this is a strong example with practically all of any wear being on the vulnerable edges. Edge wear is far more preferable to wear on the main four faces, and in this respect, this has little, so when viewed to enjoy the main artwork, this will offer very clean, little worn good looks. Not for the more discerning cover connoisseur who only want close to perfection, but this is a lovely, original example that will please many collectors. The plain white, unlined inner is included with little wear at all, just some crinkling apparent. The edges all very sound with no splits or tears.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Clearly played several times with very fine and light surface marks, a grading of Very Good applies, but a very nice very good indeed. Practically all the mild surface blemishes, mainly seen under light are ignored with just a very few, low level, gentle ticks noted in the odd place or two. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, with a fine shine, intense black and heavily pressed (as you would expect from an early pressing). Visually a fine record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This more than highly respectable record plays above its high visual grading with very little to fault. And being on Charisma, this is always far from certain. Regarding bad pressings: Charisma pink labels give me more problems than most. Strangely inconsistent often with pressing sounds even though unmarked. Van der Graaf Generator albums are notoriously difficult to find with clean, trouble-free sound and Genesis albums are sometimes the same. This early pink pressing has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This has all the dynamics and sonic range you would want from the earliest issues. Any surface sounds are minimal and few, mild traces on the odd very quiet passage or two, but gentle, brief and light and few will ever play silent. No pops and any clicks few and also faint, just enough to remind you are listening to a near 40-year-old record, many actually think it’s part of the vinyl experience and consider it totally normal, and being honest, I guess it’s true. The pressing quality on this one is high and any sound degrading due to usage is modestly mild. If absolutely pristine and totally perfect sound is demanded from this album, well the search can continue for what may prove to be the near impossible, but as I always state on any of my records that are little short of perfection, any doubts, do not bid, I cannot say fairer. Remember, I play all my records on a very revealing system and as can be seen further down, I list all my equipment to reitterate the point, nothing to hide, just fact. Again, being totally honest, little, if indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic Genesis album. This exceeded my expectations and I enjoyed it immensely. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better on the pink label, a fine copy that can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
