Genesis

'Second's Out'

Charisma, UK, 1977

GE 2001

‘Seconds Out’, recorded post-Gabriel, captures a group placed in the fortunate position of being able to draw from a deep catalogue of familiar material and couple it with a smattering of new songs.

Commencing with a brace of recent songs, most of which have since become period classics, the transformation is hugely successful, with Collins rising to the occasion as if he had been born to lead them all along. ‘Squonk’ and ‘Robbery, Assault & Battery’ are twin adjudicators, providing a stoic bridge between the Gabriel era and inevitable modernity. They set the scene for Collins to perpetrate his coup d’etat, the arduous presentation of vintage Genesis, beginning with the hazardous ‘I Know What I Like’, followed by ‘The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway’. Persuasive and faithful to the mood, these songs receive an ecstatic response, confirming that the transition was not only effective but also seamless. ‘Supper’s Ready’ (the centerpiece of ‘Foxtrot’) confirms Collins’ durability and attentiveness to detail, allowing this marvellous composition to resonate as if Gabriel had never departed, and yet somehow new life is injected into what could have been his musical Achilles’ heel.

And the triumph continues unabated to the closing notes of side four via ‘Cinema Show’ exuding lofty ambition whilst ‘Dance On A Volcano’ and ‘Los Endos’ make a wonderfully dignified and veracious bookend to an exhaustive exercise in how to showcase progressive rock without the usual hollow, surgical expressionism.

Unbeatable!

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: Charisma, UK, 1977

Vinyl: Super clean condition with only minor signs of use and no spindle marks. Side 3 displays a couple of surface scuffs (note NOT Scratches) but the rest of the album grades as a very strong MINT- if not better!

Cover: No signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated gate fold cover. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is perfectly square, stiff, straight and uncrushed. Looks like it stepped out of the factory yesterday. Grades as shop fresh MINT!
