"The Silent Sun" (1968) is the premiere single by English rock band Genesis. It was written by Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel at a time when the band's potential producer, Jonathan King, was starting to lose interest. Knowing that King was a fan of the Bee Gees, Banks and Gabriel wrote the song specifically to recapture his attention.[1] It worked.[2] The band was signed and the song was released as a single on February 22, 1968, and they would soon begin work on their debut album, From Genesis to Revelation.

"The Silent Sun" is a fusion of folk rock and pop rock. The heavy use of orchestral strings and lightweight romantic lyrics make this song a far cry from the progressive music that would follow on Genesis' next album, Trespass. The song, like most of From Genesis to Revelation, has been mostly ignored by the band, as it has not appeared on any Genesis compilation or live album.

 Personnel

  • Peter Gabriel – vocals
  • Mike Rutherford – bass guitar
  • Tony Banks – piano
  • Anthony Phillips – acoustic guitar
  • Chris Stewart – percussion

with

  • Arthur Greenslade – Orchestral Arrangements

my records are condition graded visually in accordance with Record Collector's Grading System as follows:

MINT (M): Unplayed, pristine condition, often still sealed.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in almost brand new condition with no apparent surface marks, full original vinyl lustre, and no deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in near perfect condition.

EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and/or packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record obviously has been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover and/or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has deteriorated noticeably, perhaps with some distortion and/or scratches. The cover and/or contents may suffer from folding, scuffing, spine-splits, major discolouration, etc.
