Genesis : Selling England By The Pound 1Y//1 2Y//1 Small Mad Hatter Press 1975
This early pressing on the small Mad Hatter label plays with incredible quality on both sides. The clarity, depth, power and warmth of the audio has to be finest I have heard on this classic album. Yes there are a couple of light clicks but this is clearly a record that has hardly ever been played. It is in pristine condition (as is the cover) and I cannot overstate just how STUNNING the sonic quality is here. The triumvirate of 'After The Ordeal / The Cinema Show / Aisle Of Plenty' on S2 is mind-blowing and S1 is quite impressive also! It may not be a first pressing but sonically this classic prog album is up there with the very best.
The cover is a work of art! It has been so well preserved and holds its original shape and structure perfectly. There is no obvious wear. The lyric insert is perfect and the original inner sleeve is in excellent condition also.
I believe this pressing is known as a transitional press. It has the small Mad Hatter labels and Phonogram is credited on the labels. Pressed in 1975 it is a stunning version of this all time classic.

Visual description
The vinyl is visually stunning and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light it is difficult to find any hairlines! Perhaps a handful of ultra small faint ones but you need a magnifying glass really! There is obviously no groove or surface wear and the run outs are pristine also. The Mad Hatter Charisma labels are so close to perfect with barely any spindle wear.
Play Grading
The vocal intro on 'Dancing With The Moonlit Knight' is 'as new' with no background no exaggeration! The instrumental bridge has just one barely audible static and one light tick and then the next verse plays perfectly. It continues to play with stunning precision, the clarity of sound really is incredible! The Young man... verse is a fine example of that and the louder vocal that follows is just as strong and clear. The powerful instrumental is outstanding! The power and definition of the audio cannot be faulted and there is no distortion on the top end. I cannot emphasise enough just how immaculate the audio is and Gabriel's next vocal is on the same level. There's another 'loud' instrumental passage that plays to perfection and the quieter instrumental end section plays beautifully with no background of any kind. Wow! This is as close to perfect that you will find, just that one minor tick near the start. You can hear every subtle nuance in the music, just listen to the final few seconds and fade out if you win this, you will understand exactly what I mean! It has to grade as Mint- and is quite possibly the finest version of this classic I have ever heard.
The intro on 'I Know What I Like...' has a couple of barely audible statics at the beginning, no need to mention it really! The opening vocal section is faultless as is the first chorus. This standard is kept up as it progresses and it plays with a clarity and warmth that is second to none. Every vocal and instrumental section play with unbelievable quality and to say it is playing 'as new' is genuinely an honest appraisal of the audio. The mellotron type ending is a case in point - out of this world! No minus is required here it is Mint in every sense of the word.
The piano intro on 'Firth Of Fifth' has only a handful of mega quiet statics which clearly are not intrusive as they are incredibly quiet! The opening two verses are 'as new' and the quieter third verse is close to that with just one light tick. The gentle flute section plays with sublime clarity and as it builds the playback is STUNNING! The depth and resonance during the next instrumental is so impressive and Hackett's solo section 10/10. Sonic quality should not be this good on a 51 year old record! The final vocal has no inner groove distortion and the closing piano piece has no intrusion either. Mint-
'More Fool Me' has one light click on the but otherwise plays with perfect clarity. Collins' first verse is very clean with only a couple of light ticks and the chorus has no interference. From then on it plays with stunning clarity so a grade ranging between Ex+ and Mint- is fair.

The 'marching' intro on 'The Battle Of Epping Forest' has no background and the opening vocal section is of the same high end standard. The first chorus is just as strong and it continues to play with STUNNING clarity and definition. Once again I cannot believe what I am listening to! Admittedly there is one light click and minor tick in the instrumental bridge just before the They called me the Reverend verse but that is the only interference across the entire track. This verse then plays with remarkable clarity as does the next chorus. The Bob the Nob !!! verse is 'as new' and the final vocal passage is just as strong and clear. The closing instrumental ends this classic with imperious quality once more. This is so close to the perfect version and it's only one tiny (and I do mean tiny!) speck that results in the one second of interference! I still think Near Mint is correct because it is exactly that, so so close to Mint.
'After The Ordeal' does indeed play with a clarity, depth and warmth comparable to a vinyl pressed yesterday. There is no background not even a dust tick and Mint is an easy grade to give. Hackett's section is superb.... as is the entire instrumental and the long fade out has no intrusion either.
The intro on 'The Cinema Show' plays with wonderful clarity and the first verse more than keeps up the standard as does the second verse. It continues in the same precise way and again the clarity level is through the roof! The two third verses incorporating the instrumental / vocal section is a case in point - absolutely stunning! The classic instrumental (we all know which one) then plays with a sonic quality that is as crystal clear as you would like. As the volume increases the audio is phenomenal - seriously never heard anything like it! Yep I'm beginning to sound a little over-enthusiastic but audio such as this has that affect! It builds in majestic fashion and it just could not play any better, you can see why it became a firm live favourite for years and it demands to be turned up to max! Every note of Banks' section is flawless and this is without doubt the finest rendition of this classic that I have ever heard - it is is STUNNING from the first note to the last and I very much doubt I have ever sold a MINT version before but we certainly have one here!
The acoustic segue into 'Aisle Of Plenty' is perfect and the one verse has no intrusion either. The brief instrumental is 'as new' also and the closing 'vocal' is just as impressive. Another flawless Mint version and a side that is so so close to perfect.
The Cover, Lyric Insert & Inner Sleeve
The James Upton cover is in fantastic condition with no obvious wear. The edges and spine are unmarked and the corners have barely any wear either. The opening edge is pristine and the same came be said for the front cover, there are only a couple of minor edge creases next to the spine. The back cover is in pristine also and you would not be disappointed if you had just bought this cover brand new. Not bad for 51 years old!
The dark green lyric insert is in perfect Mint condition and the original poly-lined Plastic Bags... inner is in great condition also. It has no side splits or tears, very little creasing and only a little glue residue marking around the edges.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
