Genesis : Selling England By The Pound A-1U / B-2U 1st Press Large Mad Hatter 1973
This first pressing plays with superb audio for the vast majority. As you can see from my audio grading there is only minimal background and there are no clicks or pops. Some very light static but not very much and there is nothing intrusive. It's so difficult to find a NM version of this album but I'm sure the winning bidder will not be disappointed with this one, it has been very well preserved and definitely not overplayed.
The cover is in excellent condition and is so much cleaner than most you see today. The thick green card lyric insert is easily the best I have seen, it is stunning. The original inner sleeve is also in excellent condition.
It is said that the first pressing was issued with an actual lyric inner sleeve in which you can place the record. The one included here is a single piece of thick green card. However, the first pressing also had a cover made by the E.J. Day Group as per this one. Everything else relates to a first pressing - the matrix, large Mad Hatter on the labels and the B & C credit on the labels. I'll guess I'll leave it up to the bidders if it is a first or second press!

Visual description
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a strong glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can see some faint hairlines but there is nothing that stands out. Under 'normal' lighting the vinyl is in lovely condition! There is obviously no groove or surface wear and the run outs are very clean also. The large Mad Hatter Charisma labels are in great condition with no marking and minimal spindle wear.
Play Grading
The vocal intro on 'Dancing With The Moonlit Knight' plays with stunning clarity and there are only a handful of very quiet statics right at the start, you can hardly hear them! This vocal section continues in much the same way with no intrusion and that classic first instrumental piece plays beautifully. The Young man... verse is perfect and the next louder vocal plays with great power, depth and clarity. The next (louder) instrumental is superb! Again the power and depth is 'high end' and the next vocal is just as strong and clear. There is no static distortion on Gabriel's vocal and the 'sound' really is so clean and precise. The rest of this classic keeps up the standard - the quieter instrumental end section plays very clearly and the music comes through so clearly - a hint of light static but it really is so much in the background and totally non-intrusive. There are no ticks, clicks or pops - I will grade this section as Ex+ but the main part of the track is Near Mint at the very least.
The intro on 'I Know What I Like' is nigh on perfect with only a very gentle whoosh sound at the start. The opening vocal section is perfect as is the first chorus. From then on it plays with sensational quality and again has a clarity of sound you only find on a very well preserved vinyl. Every section is stunning sonically and Mint- is richly deserved.
The piano intro on 'Firth Of Fifth' plays with real quality and with only very minimal light background static every now and then. The opening two verses play with exceptional clarity and the third quieter verse is so clean also with barely any static. The instrumental has only minimal light static at the start and again it's the music that stands out. As it builds and the volume increases the audio is superb and Hackett's solo section in particular stands out. The audio has such depth and the final vocal section has only a little inner groove distortion, nothing intrusive. The closing piano piece plays without any background. I would say this ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint
'More Fool Me' has one staticy click type sound on the intro but otherwise plays with sublime clarity. Collins' first vocal again plays so clearly and the chorus is perfect. It continues to play with wonderful clarity and warmth for a such a quiet final track. Some very gentle whooshing through the grooves towards the end but it doesn't take away from what it is a very clean version. Notoriously difficult to find on first / early pressings! Again I think a grade from Ex+ to Near Mint is fair.

The 'marching' intro on 'The Battle Of Epping Forest' is superb! The clarity is remarkable and the audio definition is so impressive also, 'as new' is a fair description. The opening vocal section is equally as strong and the depth on the audio really stands out. The first chorus is perfect and it continues to play with STUNNING quality. I don't think I've heard a cleaner more precise version and I cannot overstate how immaculate the audio is. Every vocal and every instrumental play with a rare quality - Gabriel at his lyrically verbose best. A picnic indeed! From start to finish I heard only one obvious static and even that isn't loud! The end instrumental has literally no intrusion and Mint- is easily deserved.
The opening section on 'After The Ordeal' does have some light statics but they are hardly intrusive, you can't describe them as obvious ticks. Hackett's section plays very clearly with only minimal background static and as the volume picks up the audio is flawless. The long fade out has no intrusion either. Ex
The intro on 'The Cinema Show' plays with great clarity and the first verse is on the same level. The next verse has only a handful of mega quiet statics and from then on it plays with a real sense of clarity and warmth. There is no interference and I only 'picked up' a small number of minor statics and when I say statics I mean those minor inconsequential sounds you hear - much quieter than ticks! The classic instrumental section plays with STUNNING quality and again there is literally no intrusion on the audio. The depth and resonance is outstanding and you can tell why it was a firm live favourite. Banks' section towards the end is mind-blowing and it demands to be turned up to max! I do think Collins' could be a little higher in the mix but who am I to complain! It has to grade as Mint-
'Aisle Of Plenty' ends this superb album with sublime audio from the get go. The acoustic 'segue' is perfect and the vocal has no background either aside from one minor static. The brief instrumental is so clean and then the final 'vocal' has only the bare minimum of static distortion near the end. Near Mint
The Cover, Lyric Insert & Inner Sleeve
The E.J. Day cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear. The edges are so clean and only the top edge has one very small surface 'crack' in the centre, it is not a split. The thin pinched spine is in superb shape and all four corners have hardly any wear. The opening edge is close to perfect also. The front cover is very clean with only very minimal surface rub around the edges and the back cover is similar with a small mark in the lower right corner also. Either side of the spine there are some minor edge creases as is common. A fine example overall and so much better than most you see today.
The original green thick card lyric insert is in fantastic condition, 'as new' really. There is no marking or creasing, there are no negatives - one tiny corner rub maybe! The original plain white die-cut inner has no side splits or tears, hardly any creasing and only a little age related fading around the edges.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
