USA DOUBLE VINYL ALBUM ON YELLOW ATCO LABEL IN GATEFOLD SLEEVE WITH ORIGINAL PRINTED INNER SLEEVES.
Although a second or third pressing, this was mastered using the first generation George Peckham [Porky/Pecko] plating - see matrix details below - and does not have the disturbing mastering defect '50hz hum' that the very first UK pressings had. There are a number of masterings of this Genesis classic, but the best ones are usually the UK -2U Porky/Pecko pressings (with the hum, unfortunately) and all the USA pressings that have Porky/Pecko in the run-offs.
This is a deceptive recording, it does not sound very good on average stereo systems, but the moment you play it on a decently set-up mid to top-end hi fi system, it opens up amazingly and sounds very alive. The CD issues are generally too bright and compressed, as are the vinyl reissues, although some prefer the out of print Classics reissue. It is hard to find clean original era pressings of this album, added to the fact Atlantic usually pressed on poor vinyl, so finding a clean, little played copy in a still-white sleeve is quite a challenge.
