Label/Format: Charisma – Original pink scroll format, smooth finish with B&C credits, of course. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both clean and attractive with only modest handling traces. Spindle marks on side one are very light, side two are light+ with a couple of very fine marks near the hole that show a little more.

Cat Number: CAS 1020.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: A hugely impressive 164 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Quite rare as a first pressing, only after time did the band’s popularity grow and new fans investigate the earlier albums. By then, this was mostly via the pink Hatter label format which are relatively common.

Brief Info: Second album from one of Progs most famous ever bands. This is the highly collectable and superior Gabriel–‘Progressive’ era and these are far from common. After the debut album on Decca flopped, this sold poorly also, just scraping into the album charts at a lowly 98, it failed to chart at all in the US. Again the price guides give few clues to value and rarity on this album, this simply does not show up often and those that do often in very poor conditions. This is not a perfect example but it still a very nice one and it’s very early. Early Genesis played complex, structured music that either appeals or doesn’t, this is certainly not the commercial sound this band eventually changed too later and their early music has to be worked on for maximum pleasure. I am always fearful on pressing quality on these vintage Charisma records, they do vary considerably and so often they have hidden pressing sounds or noise. As much as I loved the bands that recorded on this famous progressive label, some were spoilt by less than perfect sound. This one is pretty good with any surface sound light and infrequent, this too on a fairly delicate album. It’s certainly better than some I have heard in the past, the playing surfaces suggest only modest use. The cover is also as fragile, again this is attractive with any blemishes or wear relatively light. The thin paper lyric insert is included also, the only blemish of real note to this being a very small, neat tear on the bottom edge. A immensely difficult and scarce album in all respects and although this is not connoisseur quality, it’s a very nice one and many collectors will treasure it.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: [Unlaminated covers are always the most vulnerable for rubbing, fading, sticker tears and ringwear, gatefolds are more prone still and the darker they are, the more this type of wear occurs and shows. Some sleeves have a textured finish or die-cut shaped edges or ‘windows’. These are even more delicate and the hardest to find in top condition. Fully laminated covers are more resistent to wear but often the laminate ages with dulling, creases and blistering. Many 60s covers have outer flipback construction, these are very vulnerable to damage]. (US covers are the most fragile of all, very rarely laminated and made with thick brittle card that rubs and ringwears badly. Seams and edges split easily). Please see format below to access this cover’s potential for wear and damage.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-) an unlaminated gatefold format with a matt textured finish on the outside faces. The centre is smooth and has the E. J. Day imprint and B&C credits as can be seen in my close up picture.

Cover Front: The front is attractive and generally clean. Only with close viewing can light surface and press marks be seen. Those few present mostly new the bottom edge. A couple of tiny scuffs near the top are just evident with the odd minor tone trace or tiny faint stain. The lack of ring marks and creasing is a bonus and there is barely trace of speckle to the delicate textured surface. Minor storage bottom edge burring is visible but few will avoid this totally. Given all the facts, this front has survived its 40 years well.

Cover Back: The back is similar but more vulnerable of course with a very heavy thick record inside all this time. Hence avoiding ringwear is immensely difficult and again, most of the early covers will have some. Here mostly present near the bottom edge with a trace near the top. There is a faint stain trace near the bottom left corner also, but this again this has modest visibility. These rare vintage progressive covers have to be taken for what they are, fragile and wear-prone, given the facts, this is a very decent example.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A few small marks and odd faint surface crease but this inside looks really lovely as I hope my close-up pictures shows.

Top Edges: Light rubbing on the front, more moderate on the back.

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing on both.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this right outside back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. The original covers had not text and the artwork flows around. A moderate rub-chip near the centre and the top and bottom has rubbed. That apart, this fragile spine has faired well.

Corners: All corners have rubbed in respect to their edge, the spine pair have rubbed around a centimeter downwards also. Respectable shape is retained however.

Cover Summary: Not perfect as my grading suggests but delicate and fragile, but still attractive and importantly, original. Many collectors will enjoy it but not for the more discerning collector this time.

The Insert: EX++ with a small tear on the bottom edge as mentioned already. One small minor edge crease with ultra faint and fine handling ruffles (this being very critical). Very clean and attractive, printed on one side only, even the back is clean. Thin and fragile and this will take some beating.

Inner: The plain white unlined inner is included also. The original owner put the band, title and Cat. No. on one corner in neat ball-pen. This has aged a little with some creasing and a very small bottom edge split. Again its original and not swapped, I feel it’s always important to reitterate this fact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A fine EX, arguably better still with nothing more than faint and fine surface blemishes or hairlines. Most of any fine blemishes are seen on the run out grooves which are of little consequence. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with good shine, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy that has been played a few times but light years off excessive. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare original prog classic plays up too and mostly above its visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are gentle and light and mostly infrequent, but this does have a number of quieter passages and I truly believe ‘silence’ is a near impossible ask from a pink pressing. Just remember what so many of these could and indeed were played on. Many music lovers still used old mono record players for these types and often with disastrous consequences. One jolt or arm drop and another deep penetrating mark inflicted. That delicate and complex sound information in those grooves often shredded by worn chipped stylus that ruined the audio quality. This is a real delicate and intricate album (as already stated), but this very heavy record with deep grooves gave a lovely account of itself. The delicate instruments have an in the room quality and the finer detail like the triangle strikes are incredibly forward and sharp. If absolute dead silence is mandatory, well the CD version is an option, for those who enjoy the lovely realistic strums of 12-string guitars, delicate flutes and plucked strings, vinyl still has the edge. This is quite an intricate recording and work and not that commercial compared to their later titles. Few available early examples will better this vastly I feel sure. This does have a little gentle surface sound in places but it will only concern the most fussy or intolerant listener, the lack of significant pops or clicks is a major bonus on this album, those quiet passages have such fine compacted grooves that damage more easily. This copy could prove quite challenging to find significantly better, all considered this scarce album is worthy of high recommendation. Not connoisseur standard, if any collector has doubts, do not bid, but for those who want an early one, this is certainly worth considering.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
