RARE IN THIS CONDITION!

Another from my personal collection. Purchased from new and initially played a few times to record to tape and then stored in a case with the vinyl seperated from the sleeve and cover for protection.This is how I have always stored my records! This would be the 2nd Vertigo spaceship label variation rarely seen in this condition!  The vinyl has had only very minimal play from new and importantly there are no loud clicks or pops during the audio and no distortion,, which plays through with stunning clearity and vibrant throughout ! Very rare 35 year old album like this!

Acquiring the Taste was the second album of English progressive rock band Gentle Giant, released in 1971. This was a departure from the blues and soul styles found on their self titled debut. It was more experimental, more discordant, and with more varied instrumentation.

 In the sleeve text, the band made this famous declaration: "...It is our goal to expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of being very unpopular. We have recorded each composition with the one thought - that it should be unique, adventurous and fascinating. It has taken every shred of our combined musical and technical knowledge to achieve this. From the outset we have abandoned all preconceived thoughts of blatant commercialism. Instead we hope to give you something far more substantial and fulfilling. All you need to do is sit back, and acquire the taste." Most versions of this album (both LP and CD) have a mastering defect at the beginning of the title track. The first two notes of the synthesizer are heard at the wrong pitch before the correct pitch stabilizes. This error probably caused by an analog tape recorder coming up to speed. The correct version of this track can be found on the remastered 2 CD Gentle Giant collection titled The Edge of Twilight released in the U.K. in 1996 as well as the original U.K. Vertigo (swirl and spaceship) label vinyl pressings. The album cover has some innuendo in that it is made to look like a tongue licking an anus. However, when opened completely, it is actually a tongue licking a peach.

The vinyl

This is the original thicker type of vinyl only found like this on the earlier pressings! This vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable! looks awesome!! Initial inspection this I find it hard to see a blemish on the playing surface ! Any marks that could possibly be seen would be sleeve removal marks at least no scratches that would cause any loud clicks or pops!!

The Audio Quality

I have play tested the vinyl two times prior to listing at very loud volume on a top system! This plays through cristal clear and very vibrant throughout! without distortion and i heard no loud clicks or pops,, it is obvious that this vinyl has barely been played in my opinion! Please allow for light isolated background static/crackle that may be heard during some quieter places  common on this pressing, but nothing that would spoil the overal awesome audio effect in my opinion!  I would grade the audio at least excellent plus to very near to mint!

Points to note! This has been stored in a case all of its storagelife!,, with the vinyl seperated from the sleeve and cover! This is how i have always stored my records! A build up of dirt and dust over the years from laying dormant causes static crackle! A constant clean before each play is recomended!,, from my personal experiance this greatly reduces this static and subsequently enhances the audio quality!!

Please note! I always add this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd light static tick\crackle (not consistant throughout the audio! Please remember that this is a genuine 1st press that is 31 years old and would have originally been played on a 31 year old system!!  

The Labels

These are the original Vertigo Spaceship label variation! rarely seen like this! There is just very minimal spidering only noticable angled to the light! little if no spindle ware the hole is perfectly round! 

 Record Sleeve

This is the white poly lined and UK patented sleeve without any edge splits or tares!

The Cover

This is the original Vertigo UK unlaminated gatefold cover printed by Howards printers! In superbe strong and straight condition after 35 years! Amaizingly there is no edge splits or tares and no real rubbing ware to talk of. Please not, there is a slight surface split at the spine and a sticker tare at the rear noticable if looked for but in general this cover is in exceptional condion for its age! This must grade at least excellent plus in my opinion!
