Brief Info: A lengthy and superb 17-track sampler by various Vertigo artists and bands. Not only does this impressively packaged double set promote top quality acts, including some rarer progressive bands, it also promotes the then new spaceship label format that replaced the Spiral label. Some of the songs featured had not even been issued prior to this double set, so-much-so, some albums had not even be titled. The songs included are from the very back-end of the Swirl era and the historical importance of this album cannot be over-stated. It marked the end of the Swirl label and welcomed in the new, highly attractive Spaceship format. No filler tracks on this around 85 minute sampler that features one of the most famous covers any promotional album ever had – so fresh and tasty, you can almost taste the mintiness of that 43-year-old stick of seaside rock – a supreme example all-round – go on, Suck It and See!

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++). A gatefold format with the front and back laminated, this ends on the inside top edges. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the two soft-lined Philips style inner sleeves.

Laminate – Front & Back: A very tasty looking cover, almost as fresh and minty as when issued back in 1973. The laminate is very clear, fresh and shiny, that sticky candy stick will rarely be seen looking better than this. All fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and minimal traces of friction rubs or dulling, any surface marks or blemishes are tiny, very few and faint. A tiny few very fine edge hairline creases hardly register and still very white with bright vivid colour. Promoting the spaceship label as well as the bands, but still with the famous Swirl logo on the front cover – this is an exceptional example.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Spectacular artwork looking fantastic with hardly anything to fault. The laminate ends on the top edges, but hardly any pulling or ink lifting from the ends. An exceptional clean and attractive gatefold that more than complements the lovely outer faces.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four practically has made, smooth unpeeled laminate, flush, parallel, flat and straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp to very sharp with barely any wear and both guaranteed untrimmed, any thickening or burring tiny, very little and faint. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: A super looking spine: any laminate cracking is minimal, a trace at the bottom with a small mild tone trace as seen. Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and clear laminate.

Corners: All mostly in superb condition again, any tip wear tiny and faint, being white, any rubbing would barely register anyway and all retain excellent to near mint shape. A very small hint of a semi-crease on the top front right, t his being critical.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this famous 1970’s Vertigo sampler cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This wonderful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: the soft-lined matching white inners are in very fine condition. A little aged with the usual browing of the seam edge adhesive. A little edge creasing and some crinkle, four crisp and neat window circles and linings intact, these the more semi-transparent type. No edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) to (++): a super visual pair that are very clean with lovely fresh shine and solidly pressed. A pair hardly even played on all the evidence with four highly impressive, very little marked playing surfaces. With scrutiny under bright angled light, a finy few mostly ultra fine and faint surface traces, mostly even finer than hairlines, and no stylus scratches. Visually super records that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, both very well pressed, the odd sporadic tick only. With varying volume and some challenging songs, total silence is a huge ask on any records this age. Some of the finest the label had to offer from this time – opening with the brilliant ‘Children of the Grave’ by Black Sabbath, then Beggar’s Opera, next comes the magnificent ‘Boys in the Band’ by Gentle Giant, followed by the lesser-known, but also impressive Atlantis – and that’s just one one! Many discovering the delights of Vertigo via this legendary sampler, but by this time the Swirl label had all-but disappeared. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been superbly stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these impressive records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – SUCK IT AND SEE! – IT’S VERY TASTY!!

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
