Brief Info: Superb set covering the first five years of this classic complex progressive band. Famed for their first four albums on the Vertigo Spiral label, this compilation includes cuts from them all and also the two subsequent WWA albums. Superbly packaged and in impressive visual and playing conditions, all four sides play very well with little unwanted – a very brief hint of surface sound on side two on a short quiet segment – little else. The perfect introduction to this complex band that do sometimes divide opinions, there can be no better way experience their music and not a bad song to be heard. Like all this band’s albums, it is brilliantly recorded and produced.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howard’s, and including the famous swirl logo. Both original lined inner sleeves are included.

Front & Back: Both sides impressive and clean. Any marks, creasing or rubbing all being little and light. The lack of ringwear always good news.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Gentle hint of rubbing near the edges, little else.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with minimal traces of wear.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above with just a little rubbing on the front towards the right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear at all, a trace of burring on the back edge being slightly critical. Records entered on these outside edges that are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine that is practically as made. Solid and thick, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so all edges are flush and parallel. All text is perfect and even the ends and folds have avoided wear.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is small and light, excellent shape is retained with no knocks..

Cover Summary: An impressive all-round example of this lovely 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: one has two price stickers on it – the original 5.29 asking price, then a sale 2.99 one next to it. Two Polydor style inners with the more opaque soft lining as seen through four crisp window circles. Mildly aged only with the usual edge darkening which is light. Minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual pair that are very clean with excellent shine and fairly solidly pressed. These look hardly even played on all the evidence. Any surface traces minimal and ultra faint, even viewed under bright angled light, hardly anything at all. Visually impressive, these should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to, or even above their high visual grading with very little to fault. Gentle Giant albums were always superbly produced with audiophile quality, offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Audio quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. As mentioned above, a very brief trace of surface sound on side two on a quiet passage – this being somewhat critical, and also being played on very revealing equipment as listed further down, few will better this pair. Most will know the complex nature of the Gentle Giant material, and this never easy for vintage vinyl. But this pair excel and play beautifully for most of their duration, there will be few better ways to experience the early Gentle Giant sound. Few copies will match or outperform these hardly played records I feel sure. Appearing well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these very clean Vertigo records. This pair merit strong recommendation for quality audio and great progressive rock entertainment.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
