Description
George Braith(waite) with Grant Green, Billy Gardner, and Clarence Johnston: "EXTENSION". Blue Note monaural catalog BLP4171. Original blue & white label marked "Blue Note Records Inc. New York USA". Deep groove pressing. Dead wax marked BNLP-4171A and BNLP-4171B. Also stamped "Van Gelder". Released in 1964.
We spot-play all used LPs on a high-end Technics turntable fitted with a Shure M95ED cartridge, tracking at 1.5 grams.
Disk condition: Very Good Plus. We washed this disk but did not steam-clean it. We've photographed this LP to show the overall quality as well as the flaws. There is near-zero surface noise as each side begins, growing to light surface noise near the end of each side. There is some visible groove wear ("grey grooves") noticeable as you get closer to the labels on both sides (see last photo in the listing). There are two areas of surface scuffmarks on tracks 1 and 2 on side 2 (see the next-to-last photo). These are audible as faint pops. Duration is only a few revolutions. There are no skips and no scratches.
Van Gelder's trademark "hot" sound is engineered into this wax. This fact, combined with the high audio level at which the disk is cut, hides nearly all of the surface noise due to groove wear. Overall this disk is a very enjoyable player -- the sound is full bodied, full range, and a lot better than you might expect based on a visual examination!
Sleeve condition: Very Good Plus. No splits. Some age-yellowing. One corner ding and one nick on the open edge back side (see the second and fourth photos). Promo stamp on the back side. Still a very strong sleeve.We've provided a new white paper inner sleeve.
