Imagine for a minute that you're about to record your debut jazz album and you want to play a couple cover songs.  Did the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb" come to mind?  Well, it did for Braith.  The song opens with some Native American style percussion, a bit of two reed playing from Braith,followed by some busting tenor work incredibly backed by the rhythm section, Grant Green plays what may be his best solo ever, Billy Gardner gets the church rockin' on the organ while Green takes a breather and they close it out with intensity and more rain calling Native American drumming.  Mary had a little lamb alright.  Besides following Mary around, it liked to get high with her too.

The title of the album might be in reference to the fact that George Braith has a pension for playing two reed instruments at once.  This isn't really a new idea.  Rahsaan Roland Kirk had been playing three at the same time for a while before 1963.  It was Braith's intent to follow Kirk but also give this technique more musical merit beyond sideshow status.  He does that but alienates the listener a bit by not showcasing his excellent tenor sax style by itself enough.

Grant Green's guitar playing is refined throughout.  On "Mary Had a Little Lamb" it has a crispness and blazing speed that I've never heard from him before.  The music on a whole feels in between the music of two organ players: Jimmy Smith and Larry Young.  It's midnight chillin' with a touch of experimentation.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(c)           The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME  jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastylite Corporation’s pressing plant.

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)             Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(f)            The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(g)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
