Label/Format: Apple – sides 1 to 4 have the orange coloured format as seen on the first label scan. Sides 5 and 6 have a customised format as seen on the second label scan (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: All six are in fantastic conditions: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with spindle marks ranging from virtually zero to very light. The records look hardly even played and sound is perfection throughout.

Cat Number: STCH 639.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 140 / 136 / 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Moderate, this was a popular album and for a box set especially, it sold well. A very small few had the boxes made in England, this however is the more abundant US-made version. Let me make it very clear, the box, poster and the inners are American made as most-all were. The records are UK pressed as can be seen on the label scan. This is a ‘standard’ UK issue and clearly the box and inners were subcontracted out. Now mention must be made of the fragility of the box hinge which was woefully under-strength and inadequate for the job of long-term opening and closing of the lid part. This one has been looked after with great care and the flimsy thin hinge is still fully intact and strong, but being only ultra thin black tape, this has to be opened and closed with utmost care. Finding copies that have survived intact and ultimately well-looked-after conditions is difficult. Boxes often flattened, torn with broken edges and badly scuffed surfaces are more the normal these days. Inners with torn with edge splits are often considered normal as movement in transit often knifed them even before purchase. The giant poster was so often mounted on walls and damaged with pins or tape, corners ripped off, badly creased or missing altogether – this one is unmounted and practically as made. The records looks superb and play the same and include early matrixes, mothers and stampers. A copy that will delight most collectors I feel sure.

Brief Info: Harrison’s 1970 triple album that for me is by far the best post-Beatles album he ever made by some considerable distance. Including material dating back to the mid-Beatles era, there are some real gems included here including the famous ‘My Sweet Lord’. Sides one to four are typical Harrison songs, while the last disc has lengthy jam instrumentals featuring a host of super-star musicians. Most interested people reading this will know all about this album already and probably more than me to be honest, I prefer to explain more of what is available and condition.

This Album’s Potential for Wear: Very High: as explained above, these lavish boxed sets are rarely seen devoid of damage or severe wear. As stated above, the ridicuously thin hinge tape has survived intact and do not take that for granted.

Box Grade and Format: This is a one-piece box with the lid held and base held together by what is a way under-strength piece of black tape. Finding them intact is no mean feat and not only that, this one is practically as strong as when purchased which tells me, it has not been opened and closed too many times. The front is matt finished with a paste-on construction. This still looks very nice indeed even with a smallish price sticker residue mark near the top right corner. If one of these was applied from the outset, few will avoid them. Vintage price stickers were far less ‘cover-friendly’ than later ones that did peel off more easily and left lesser or no residue. Can I make this clear, this price has NOT removed any surface or caused any tearing at all, simply the backing has left its shape mark on the area’s surface. Some cover finishes were more susceptible to this than others, and clearly this one was vulnerable. Few other blemishes other than minor grubbiness or handling traces on the right edge and a very fine and faint press line against a seam on the left, this being a natural occurence and this almost nit-picking. The back is matt black and practically as made with barely a blemish to be seen bar one tiny scuff on the bottom edge. The black tape hinge is pristine and as solid as they conceivably get. The outer edges are all very clean as is the spine text which is embossed with gold block lettering and totally unworn (please see the text close-up pictures). Edge fit is tight and unbowed which again is unusual with all corners ultra neat, crisp, undinked and with NO repairs. The inner edges opening are all like new and there are NO repairs or damages at all. The orange card inside the lid and tray is little short of immaculate also and ultra clean and fresh with barely a blemish to be seen. Overall the box is beautifully shaped with no crushing or creasing and really sets the bar incredibly high, its a joy to view and hold, the price sticker outline and minor handling traces on the edge are really the only blemishes worthy of mention. It has a tiny ‘Printed in USA on the bottom right of the front.

The Inners: All three EX+ at least and arguably even better. These were never lined which makes the lack of edge splits all the more remarkable – there are NO repairs. All very clean and fresh again and devoid of any real creasing. The surfaces are lightly textured with relatively light record impression and very slight burr traces to the top opening edges (again this being somewhat critical).

The Poster: Mint(-) and UNMOUNTED, yes true, this giant poster looks only lightly handled and hardly unfolded let alone put on a wall. Thus, no pin-holes or cellotape marks or damage of any kind. Unfaded with all the folds as strong as when made. Crisp edges and a clean back. Ultra faint handling traces only with minuscule traces of thumb crinkle, so light infact, it’s barely worthy of mention. The heavily bearded Harrison looks kinda spooky on this classic poster which will rarely, if ever be found fresher and cleaner than this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ to Mint(-). A superb visual set that are very clean with genuine lustre and great shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Clearly hardly even handled let alone played, any surface marks are few, light and faint, indeed most sides look almost as made. Visually super records that will delight most-all collectors I feel certain.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All three records play with pristine immaculate sound with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Even devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and these are exceptional clean pressings made at a time where quality mattered by a great label. Few copies will even match let alone outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Treated with the utmost care since purchased, they hardly get better than this and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these outstanding records. This set will still prove immensely difficult impossible to find better and merits very high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
