Label Conditions: All six are little short of immaculate as made: ultra clean, super fresh and attractive and I am truly struggling to find a spindle trace of any of them. The faint rub trace at the bottom on the scanned example, there in manufacture anyway, is the only ‘blemish’ of any note.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: the condition is the crucial factor here of course. Finding all six sides in what appears barely played (if indeed at all) with a superb, unbroken (or repaired) box, all three inner sleeves unsplit (again, no with no repairs) and the book (that includes pictures of Bob Dylan) in very fine and completely intact condition, is immensely difficult. You want this three album box set in near perfect condition for looks and sound, look no further – it’s here.

Brief Info: A groundbreaking album of it’s day, this charity fund-raising event was performed at Madison Square Garden New York on August 1st, 1971, in aid of the Bangladeshi refugees. It was way ahead of the huge charity events like ‘Live Aid’ that followed some time years after. A triple boxed set and quite lavishly made on Apple Records. Featuring a host of stars all listed above including a lesser known Apple band at the time called Badfinger. The front-line artists were George Harrison and Bob Dylan who contribute the most as ‘solo’ vocalists (with the backing musicians). Also, the recently departed Indian virtuoso sitarist, Ravi Shankar, who occupies most of side one. So for fans of these major players especially, this is an indispensable set. Superbly recorded, this copy is simply fantastic and one of the very few I have seen that includes an unbroken, near mint box – most become tatty, grubby with broken corners and crushed trays and lids. Even hard to find with intact inners, with record movement near impossible to avoid inside the box, these inners rarely, if ever are found with no edge splits. Somehow, these have remained fully intact and are GUARANTEED unrepaired, absolutely none required. For good measure, the card spacer is also included that help keep the contents secure – probably why all the parts are still so intact. The book includes the Bob Dylan pictures and the records are simply immaculate and play the same. Beautifully preserved from a quality collection, probably played once (if that) until my play-grade. A quality set and it even won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year some 40 or so years ago – looking at this example, you will hardly believe it could be this age.

Box Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a two-piece box – the lid lifts totally off as per made – this had no hinge or attachments to the tray. Made with thick card, so fairly robust, it has matt textured surfaces. Printed in the USA, as seen on a tiny imprint circle inside the lid on an edge.

Box Lid: This is a very vulnerable part of this set. It retains superb shape with barely any hints of distortion or widening of the edges – that very unusual indeed. ALL the corners are unsplit with NO repairs, they also retain superb shape, crispness with no wooliness or rubbing. The odd minor mark or friction trace only. All the text is pristine as can be seen on my close-up picture. The front graphic is pristine Mint and there is just one faint surface mark just to it’s bottom right corner – one of the few blemishes on this difficult box, and pretty minor and stops a Mint(-) grading. Any other surface marks are ultra fine and very faint indeed and this lid front looks very impressive. The lack of grubbiness or damage is near impossible to avoid - these boxes cannot really be ‘cover-protected’ due to thickness and most are very shabby and worn, and often crushed. The inside of the lid has no text or print bar the tiny encircled ‘PRINTED IN U.S.A.’, which is so small I needed to use a magnifier to read it. When I compare the inside to the outside areas, the inside is a much lighter orange and is simply Mint as made. If this means the outside has likely darkened over time, I am not sure. But if so, it would seem all have – this is not an album I have ever purchased for myself at any time, so I cannot really offer any meaningful opinion on this.

Box Tray: The tray is in equally impressive condition and is nigh-on identical to the lid with just one faint surface trace scuff on the bottom. NO splits or distortions to the corners. The inside is totally devoid of text or wear, the outside again is darker. It is very rare to find the base of the tray so unworn. The fitting together of both pieces is simply fantastic – snug, still tight and as neat as it will ever get – remember the vast age of this box. How many will ever survive better?

The Inner Sleeves: Mint(-): for all three, and this being ultra critical. For only the second time ever, I have seen all three within the same set unsplit – that is very unusual indeed. Movement within box sets is rife, and many were knifed by the records even from new. These are superb, barely any hint of creasing and all the window circles immaculate. These were not lined. The box spacer card sheet is also included to stop movement.

The Book: EXCELLENT(+): again being very critical. A 64-page heavy book, laden with colour pictures and text information. The cover is made with textured soft thick paper, the inside pages are a fraction thinner on more standard thickness paper with a very fine semi-glossy sheen. This quite fragile cover is very clean with only very faint traces of thumb crinkle and NO real creases at all. Most would have been handled and opened this superb book, so any minor crinkle is natural, and in this case, very light usage. No tears and the two original staples hold all the pages securely, these show just the merest hint of tarnish. This book includes the Bob Dylan pictures that the price guides specifically mention – were they not all the same? The pages all clean with a few minor and faint toning spot traces just here and there – I reiterate, very faint indeed. A lovely example of what is quite a delicate book that could easily be damaged if not treated with due respect., This is quite heavy too.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) for 5 sides. EXCELLENT(++): the other. Light marks within the pressing that would have been there from new, so even marking it down is harsh. A superb visual trio that are super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. No doubts whatsoever, these have hardly even been played, reitterated by supreme sound quality. Visually super records that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All six sides play up to their high visual grading or above with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that does have some dialogue. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain these records have been played very lightly indeed (if indeed at all) and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these top quality records. This set will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
