Brief Info: The second solo George Harrison album, his first and only album on the Zapple label. This an off-shoot of Apple Records dedicated for experimental and avant garde music. With only the Lennon’s ‘Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With the Lions’ issued on it as well that fared at least as badly, if not worse, it is not a label design seen very often. It quickly folded after this was released. Harrison’s first solo album ‘Wonderwall Music’ saw the artist delving into world music, that was hardly commercial and that also failed to chart in the UK, but did better in the United States. This second one which is performed entirely on the new Moog synthesiser fared still worse, almost entirely ignored and only just scraping in the US charts for a couple of weeks. This is experimental and very uncommercial, sounding more like early German progressive bands or even early British industrial acts of the late 1970s. Very collectable for Beatles completists, the artwork for the sleeve by Harrison himself apparently the child-like graphics showing the discontent within the organisation at the time. This is a superb American copy, probably played a couple of times only (including my mandatory sound check) and offering impressive sound throughout. A fairly quiet album, so a high-quality pressing becomes even more essential, this exactly that and playing with little unwanted. The odd sporadic polite reminder of what is being played is near impossible to avoid. This has a hardly worn cover and includes the elusive text inner sleeve.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better still, this is a fully intact, little-worn example. A single unlaminated format made with thick card with the paste-on style rear panel. Printed and made in the United States. Includes the Apple text inner sleeve inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: This is an elusive cover wherever it was initially made. A little tip rubbing with the odd tiny tip crease, but little else to fault on this clean, fresh and hardly-worn surfaces. These quite fragile American covers are seldom seen this nice outside of shrink wrapping.

Top Edge: Firstly, all edges on this cover has no split or repairs, they all remain solid. Any rubbing on this top edge is very gentle, little and light mostly near the very ends.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean mostly sharp with minimal traces of thickening, even seen end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with only a little natural crinkle to the surface that American spines usually have. The surface barely rubbed at all. All text is perfect and unworn, but centred low in manufacture.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, very fine retained with no knocks, the odd tiny tip crease from a a gentle dink.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this elusive and rare 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: Better than EXCELLENT for looks, but cautiously graded due to some edge splitting that I have neatly repaired, and now registering little. I do this to stop splits widening in future, and this unlined inner is fragile. A scarce inner, this has little else to fault bar darkening of the paper and minor rim impression. This was printed on one side only.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: some gentle surface marks, that common on vintage American vinyl that always seems to mark more easily than European vinyl. But totally superficial and minor, this record plays very well indeed. A very fine visual copy that is clean with excellent shine and very solidly pressed. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This high quality American pressing plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. The odd gentle sporadic tick almost unavoidable as the barest minimum on a record with many quiet passages. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. An instrumental album of experimentation with just two pieces all performed on the Moog synthesiser that have elements of late 1970s industrial electronic music (at times), this must have caused shock-waves for the very few who shelled-out for a copy back in the day – few ever did – hence its genuine rarity. Harrison and Lennon were two Beatles members who wanted to experiment with new sounds, almost certainly with the realisation they had scant chance of any commercial success – if so, they were correct – Zapple Records folded quickly after this, the second album was released. In 1970 he issued his classic ‘All Things Must Pass’, and fans were happy again. This album divided opinion heavily with extremes of views on each side. So an elusive and somewhat controversial title for Beatles fans. Its scarcity means few copies surface and fewer still will match or outperform this copy that is hardly even run-in in vinyl terms. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this brave and interesting record, my first American copy ever. I actually enjoyed this one – hardly commercial for sure, but compared to the Lennon album on Zapple, it almost is. I never have any qualms when a musician wants to do something different, but clearly it missed the mark on issue and went largely ignored. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, but be assured, this is not the usual popular music he is best known for.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
