Description
GEORGE M. SMITH -- Guitar Duets/My Teacher & I -- ex. rare, original mid-1950's (??) U.S. album on blue colored vinyl. Wicked rare and apparently completely-unknown LP of breathtakingly beautiful Folk, Country, Blues and Rockabilly electric guitar instrumentals played by one of the early giants of the guitar, George M. Smith. Smith performed on the scores to John Ford classics such as THE GRAPES OF WRATH and TOBACCO ROAD, and is credited with mentoring and inspiring dozens of studio guitar legends in the 1940's and 1950's; some of Smith's work can be found on the excellent "Guitar Rarities Vol. 1: 1934-1936" CD compilation. While much of Smith's surviving work features him accompanied by other session musicians in the background, these tracks -- recorded for guitar instruction -- showcase him and his mastery of the early electric guitar with a stunning purity and simplicity, on par with the best of Davey Graham or Bert Jansch, to mention two British guitar giants. For rock fans the stand-out tracks are two smokin' Rockabilly-Blues instrumentals, "Boogie-Woogie Guitar" and "Rock 'N Roll Guitar", but slower Folk-Country ballads like the exquisite "Londonderry Aire," "Arkansas Traveler" and "Ciribiribin" are equally stunning. There's no information on this anywhere and it's the only copy I've ever seen -- for fans of the early history of the guitar it's a beautiful and undiscovered gem. This was found with a generic white cover; I don't know if it was originally issued with a printed cover or with just the colored vinyl album. There's no date on it but based on the label and song titles I'm guessing mid-1950's. (Please note that the tracks are banded for play, so you have to lift the needle between each track.) Record: VG+, light surface wear, overall clean, on Guitarists' Records label, U.S. press.
