HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY / AFRICANS MUST UNITE ... 7-inch, 45rpm single by GERALDO PINO (& THE HEART BEATS). Original Kenya pressing on SUZUMI label (SM 1), from 1970s. Outstanding, afro funk double-sider from Nairobi, Kenya. Music led by one of the most important musicians and afro-beat / funk pioneers from the African scene. Both sides gleamed from Pino's 1974, Let's Have A Party Lp on EMI label. Features, the killer HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY club tune. Raw and primitive afro funk inspired by the James Brown / American R&B sound. Cool lead vocals sung in English over thunderous instrumentation with infectious rhythms galore... huge fender bassline / drums / wah wah / percussion and that Fela Kuti style electric piano :) Tuff breaks and beats throughout. Great for DJs. One of the best of the genre. The AFRICANS MUST UNITE side is also superb. Starts more laidback and stoned but still with a psychedelic ambience and has a funked-up change in tempo, midway onwards. Both sides recently repressed and included in the Nigeria Soul Power 70 box set by Soul Jazz Records but still no match for the vintage African OG ;) Original 4-prong centre still intact. Rare 45!!!

Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG 

Vinyl is in shiny, strong VG++ condition (closer to M-) regardless of some faint areas of hairlines / a couple of mini scuffs and a few faded areas of old speckled marks cum pressing blemishes from storage. Looks little played, in general. A couple of audible pops circa 50sec into the "Heavy, Heavy.." side from a tiny scuff line. Item plays with background surface noises (to be expected for an African pressing) that sound a little more prominent on the "Africans Must Unite'" side (as you can hear on our soundclip). One audible pop circa 1min into the "African Must Unite" side and a couple more to the fading outro. Some paper deterioration wear to label (see photo). Original 4-prong centre still intact. Item will be housed in a soft card white sleeve with brand new, poly lined paper inner. Rare 45!!!
