Description

A cult and a legend, Gerry Lockran deserves to be regarded as one of the very greatest performers to come out of the 60's British blues boom. The sad details of his tragic life and death can be found elsewhere on the internet (and I particularly recommend www.gerrylockran.com), but in the meantime, there is this album. Recorded for EMI subsidiary Waverley in 1967, this features Gerry over the following 13 tracks - Goin' Down The Road / The Riddle Song / Jason's Blues / You Don't Learn That In School / Get Back / Automechanic Blues / Trouble in Mind / Summertime / Guitar Boogie / Cocaine Blues / Work Song / Goodmornin' Blues / Careless Love. The repertoire ranges from Big Bill Broonzy and Woody Guthrie to Brownie McGhee and Leadbelly via Nat Adderley and Oscar Brown Jr., with some original material thrown in as well. His finger-picking is jaw-droppingly dextrous, full of attack and energy, and his vocal delivery (particularly of the occasional risque lyric) impassioned and intense. He must have been awesome on stage.

This album was produced with great acoustic clarity by one Jon Mark (surely the guitarist from John Mayall's Turning Point?) and recorded at Tony Pike's Studio, supervised by Hugh Murphy. The vinyl is in EXCELLENT condition, the sleeve less so - there is some creasing particularly on the front, but the fabric is intact and if it's behind a heavy duty PVC cover (which comes with the record), any blemishes are hard to discern - I'll grade the sleeve (standard RC gradings apply) at VG. I'm listing this with the greatest reluctance - please give it a good home.
