Here we have lovely Giannina Russ with two items she recorded for Fonotipia in Milan in June 1908. (Thank You Robert Johannesson)
They are xPh3347 Mefistofele (Boito): “Spunta l'aurora pallida” (“It is breaking, the pale dawn of morning”) label number 92236,
and xPh3351 Traviata (Verdi): “Addio del passato” (“I’ve just sold my Volkswagen to We Buy Any Car”) label number 92237.
Unusually, the record is labelled, with a rubber stamp, as “pressed in Germany” (probably at the Odeon factory), and has a strange undersized label on one side (see pictures).
The Traviata side is very clean indeed, and plays beautifully. There are only one or two very very light sleeve/handling marks that don’t matter a hill o’ beans.
The other side (Mefistofele) is remarkably clean and tidy too. The only dipterous invertebrate in the unguent is a grit-in-the-sleeve mark which is hard to see, and doesn’t sound (you can just about hear a couple of ticks on our ludicrously expensive transcription deck if you really try).
To be totally fair with you, we’ve pointed it out and tried to photograph it. See what you think.
Using the VJM grading system (which we find to be vague and imprecise.. but heigh ho, everybody uses it) we reckon that this record is still more or less a very nice E- or V++++ because of that mark.
