Released on Verve in 1965, The Shadow Of Your Smile finds Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto stepping confidently into her early solo ascent. Produced by Creed Taylor and arranged by Don Sebesky and Klaus Ogerman, the album centres her hushed, conversational delivery within softly contoured orchestration drawn from bossa nova, jazz and mid-60s pop. The title track, 'Love Theme From "The Sandpiper" (The Shadow Of Your Smile)', glides on brushed drums and tender strings, and 'Manha De Carnaval' and 'Tristeza' highlight her poised phrasing against light rhythmic sway. 'Fly Me To The Moon' and 'Who Can I Turn To' lean toward American songbook warmth without losing any of the Brazilian lilt. A pivotal, quietly assured statement.
