Actually very rare on this first stereo label which was issued a full year after the more commonly found mono Deram label. This is an ultimate "museum" condition upgrade for all psych/prog collectors. I am very confident this has to be the very best copy you can possibly find!!

 Originally formed as a trio (Robert Fripp on guitar, Michael Giles on drums and vocals, and Peter Giles on bass and vocals) in Bournemouth, UK, in September 1967. Around June 1968, they were joined by Judy Dyble on vocals (only for about a month), and Ian McDonald on sax, keyboards and vocals. As a quintet they made several home recordings, including the later much-appraised “I Talk To The Wind”. In their time, Giles Giles and Fripp managed to release one full album and two singles, which didn’t sell well yet were considered quite interesting by the then music press. Between November 1968 and January 1969, the remaining members (omitting Peter Giles) were joined by Greg Lake, and later by roadie Peter Sinfield, and changed their name to King Crimson.

. I suppose the album's closest relative would be The Kinks' "Something Else....." in that it mixes up character sketch songs ("Newly-Weds", "One In A Million"), music hall pastiche ("The Sun Is Shining"), gorgeous melodies ("North Meadow", "Thursday Morning") all with an uber-English feel to a great effect. A few tracks strongly remind of "Syd era" Pink Floyd.

There are strong jazz elements also with the unsettling "The Crukster" (odd poem narrated over some menacing discords from Bob- the closest he gets to Crimson on this album) and the showcase "Suite No. 1" (the first section to this is dazzling........). Elsewhere we hear beautiful jazz chordings and sweet solos. Nice. 

 

This is one of those albums that clicked with me on the first listen..........put a smile on my face and generally made me feel good. Hope it can do the same thing for you lot (if you can find it!).  (Julian Cope)

In a sense beyond some dated parts like the lyrics and standard English influence on here there is quite a bit of unique creativity on here and it makes this album brilliant and somehow its own psychedelic quirky effort on its own with unique styles. There is a beautiful high quality take of "Under the Sky" on here I really loved with some nice acoustic guitar that Robert Fripp plays so beautifully. There is a lot of artistic unique expressions on here with ambitious young talents that had their own vision, particularlyMichael Giles and Robert Fripp but some nice Ian McDonald flute solos on that track too. I digress though, this LP remains to be a relic of how bands transition and changed sometimes to become something less mainstream and unique like the masterpiece King Crimson debut would be made much in the vain of all this work because the change in direction away from mundane boring pop/rock worked out into something so amazing and one of a kind, so this is really important history of King Crimson right here. These guys were so young with so much talent and lovely melodies and creativity.

I have played this in FULL> The replay is ASTOUNDING!!! There are not any jumps, pops or skips.  Very remarkable for this 1968 vinyl!!! This copy has barely been played, if at all. The heavy vinyl with high groovewalls typical of Decca presses provide a fantastic audio experience with channelling not equalled by later re-issues. I played this on my Technics turntable with a Linn cartridge and through my very revealing B&W three way speakers!!! A beautiful CLASSIC with supreme songcraft, a joy to listen to!!!!

!!!!A VERY HARD FIND!!! Most have been bought up by collectors!! This is hardly offered these days as an original first stereo press!!

 Sensational sound quality, I have played this through in its entirety and it was a great joy!!! NO skips or jumps. NO clicks or crackle, this is really a stunning heavy glossy jet black vinyl .The audio is impeccable. Inspected under an intense lightsource and angled.

Vinyl: NM.  A sensational find and barely played!!! I have played this in FULL twice over> The replay is ASTOUNDING!!! I first played for a general listen and a second time for a more detailed observation. Barely played or possibly unplayed!! Fantastic songcraft!! A personal favourite of mine and I am very glad to be able to report that this is a fine slab of vinyl without any problems at all and as such worthy of inclusion of any great prog collection. This will be an ultimate upgrade version for most collectors.  Outstanding audio delivery in all respects with a crystal clear, deep, rich, warm and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one) there is barely any surface noise. This is a beautifully clean pressing (and I must emphasise again how difficult it is to find a copy which plays this well). The whole LP sounds absolutely great and plays to a high standard with superb clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion and is very strictly graded a strong NM  for audio without anything untoward, no static or crackle at all - great copy!! Of course, NO skips, NO jumps, NO ticks.

 Sleeve: NM.  A beautifully laminated  sleeve in stunning time warp condition without any creases and even the edges are as first issued in 1968. The spine  is 100% legible. Just imagine finding this ultra rare first press without any edge wear? Well, that's exactly what we have here in all its full glory and 48(!) years old. The condition is still as it was when sold over the counter all those years ago.

Labels: NM!!! Unmarked, these are the very desirable blue silver Deram labels.  None scarcer though than this label!! I doubt we will see this again this year or the next! This vinyl has indeed barely been played. Please take a close look at the pictures and convince yourself that this is possibly the best copy on the planet.
